Crafting in RPG's/ Adventure games

Many thanks for the numerous replies.

Ive read different opinions about Gothic 3, and many people saying its a bad game. I havent played Gothic 1 or 2, so will i experience a bad game myself?

I would like to play FF14 but i have heard of the long crafting experience, but i dont quite as yet have a capable PC to play the game properly.

I havent heard of Minecraft or Lineage so i will have a look into those games.

I will also give Eve a try, i remember giving it a try a couple years ago and couldnt get quite past the tutorial. As for The Witcher the sequel sounds rather good as there are ot many loading times. I will try and find a cheap copy of The Witcher and give that a go.

Many thanks again :)

It seems one extreme to another, Minecraft which you can run on a phone....from 5 years ago or FFXIV which melts your graphics card if you turn on depth of field and AO.

FFXIV however is good fun, it's an interactive crafting system I guess, you don't just put items together and baazzing it creates it, you have to craft it yourself and it's quite easy to screw it up and 'botch' your creation. However there's chances to improve the quality and 'HQ' the item which improves it's stats if you play your cards right.

Vanguard has a fantastic crafting system too, although it's very quiet these days.

As for load times on The Witcher, just patch it up to the enhanced edition, they really knocked load times on the head.

Minecraft has a crafting system, although you are limited to what you can create - i.e. the same basic tools/weapons/decorations, but more effective versions depending on what you use to make them with. I love Minecraft - definitely worth a try.

I've played several MMOs and imo EQ2 had the best, it took a bit of skill (you had skills to use at the right time and had to think about it) and the stuff seemed worthwhile.

Lotro crafting is pretty dire, the devs strive to keep crafted gear on par with quested gear, so it's worthwhile but making them is mind numbing, you need a recipe, components and that's it, some of the better stuff has a % to fail, but that is hardly excitement.

Ryzom (mmo) had a rather good crafting system from what I remember. Don't know how active it is now, but it had a re-release last year.

Skill? I could do it in my sleep :p It was a simple trade off of speed vs durability. If your durability was good, you pumped up speed. If you lost a lot of durability, you slowed the speed right down, so you could fix the durability and proceed again.

One you figured it out there was no reason at all not to be crafting the best quality items every time. For a good few months I was the #1 baker & brewer on my server, but I quit after a couple months as the game really bored me (and seemed 1/2 finished too).

Id stay away from mmo's, they get boring very quickly.
The best crafting i did was on Neverwinter Night persistant worlds, there is a specific crafting system a lot of them use. if you can find a decent one youll be laughing. Having to fight for your materials and only being able to carry so much back to the crafting places. Being over loaded slows you down and in proper rpgs (where you loose xp and lvls when you die) thats scary stuff.

Minecraft is well on its way to becoming as good as Neverwinter Night online, but its got a long way to go, but its my game of choice at the moment.

If you've got a handy xbox or playstation, check out the Star Ocean games. They've all got crafting elements which vary from one game to the next, but they're generally a lot of fun. Besides, you'll get to play through the games themselves, which are fantastic if you're not averse to JRPGs. A special plug for Second Story on that front, original psx game that you can play on a ps2 or enabled ps3 and one of my all-time favourite RPGs. The Last Hope on the 360 is great too, but you've gotta appreciate your kawaii for that one.

that and double buffering will blow up your system, quite ridiculous that a not so great looking MMO can be so power hungry. My account is cancelled atm though waiting for improvments on the market system. Can't stand a game where I have to search a river of shops for a piece of armor etc.
