I've never bought one before, but can anytone tell me what the build quality and PSU's are like on 20 quid, own brand cases? Is it worth the saving over buying, say, an Antec, or seperate case and psu combo? Oh, and do the psu's tend to come with sata connectors?

I'm asking cos someone at work wants to know if it'd be ok to stick a lowish end system (3200+ 939 athlon) in one, which'd save a few quid for more ram or something.

Said I couldn't comment but I'd ask someone I know, which is you lot. Cheers for any help.

in most cases the psu are not true power and as ihave learnt mean jack ****. A psu should be a serious onvestment like a gpu or a cpu otherwise you are going tofind problems with your rig all the time

As above - throw them away!

I haven't looked back since moving from a pre fitted 450watt thing to my tagan 580! All the connectors i'll ever need and nice stable rails on every voltage!

Plus there's a better chance it won't go boom like the cack ones! :p

You can get good and cheap power supplies you know ;) 330w Seasonic, X-clio PSUs and lower end antecs are all very good and quite cheap. Could get the NSK4400 Antec case and PSU for £50. When they are available, no it isn't worth it.

So no then; thanks. Looks like they're prob not worth the hassle for saving a few quid. Guessed as much but thought I'd better get a more informed opinion before I went and told him so.

They're sometimes ok.
I bought a £17 case and PSU from a competitor and it ran my overclocked Athlon XP system perfectly. Okay, so the case was flimsy and pasticy and looked awful, but it did the job just fine.

I'd go for an Antec NSK4400 to be honest - much more quality and a brilliant PSU.

my £35 plastic case with 400W PSU lasted me ages. Never had a problem, but the PSU did get mighty hot especially after OCing the CPU and GPU

dont get me wrong i know that these cases and psu's can last but as you said it spunded like it was struggling a bit once you pushed it. I upgraded my GPU in one these cases and it artifacted - took it back to the store they tested it and it was fine! they said check my psu and guess what it was! since that time i would always buy a 'true watt' psu so i get what it says on the tin!!!

I've built a couple of systems in the OcUK value range cases which come in at around £20 or so and to be honest they were not too bad at all, but like anything you take your choice and get what you pay for.
