To anyone who is using this joke of an ISP:

I am getting download speeds of in and around 512kbps constantly. I contacted a few friends I know who were blueyonder and they too have noticed this drop in speed. I disconnected my router and ran straight off the modem to see if it was the router sucking up all the bandwidth and even did a check on attached devices but nothing. Virgin Media are ripping everyone off!! I've noticed it and so have others. I am paying for 4mbps and getting 0.5!! Have already emailed them and if they don't reply will be phoning and making a few threats! NOT HAPPY

Want to see if its the same nationally...

Same here-see from my thread what I thought may be wireless issues actually being virgin related-I did read somewhere that one of the companies in the merger got rid of some equipment a while back which may of saved this!

Heres my thread so you can see my speeds:

First off, calm down.

secondly, ive been with blueyonder for MANY years now, and im currently on the 4mb package, for the few years i havnt had a single problem with the internet service (few problems with tv service though). Ive been downloading most of today, and its been downloading within 50kb/s of my max download speed so the problem defenatly isnt all of virgin media, its proberly just certain areas.

if you want to get a fast response, then phone virgin media before emailing them, because if its just a local issue then chances are itll be fixed before they even read your email.

go you, keyboard warrior  just bloody phone them, if there's a problem they'll sort it a lot quicker than it'll take them to sift through the no doubt 1000's of emails they recieve daily to find yours.

screw virgin and my 1,100kb downloads

i know one means kilo bits and the other kilo bytes but do not know how to apply them properly

I checked their site at all local issues, my area (North London, Enfield Borough) doesnt seem to be listed. All my friends are within around 20 miles of me with Virgin have similar speed propblems.

I've been with Blueyonder for about 5 years and I've loved their service and customer support. It just annoys me that suddenly the company has changed hands and they haven't got off to a really good start with their customers have they?

I did have a rant a bit before lol, since it was taking aaaages to download things going at between 15kbps and 35kbps. I just hope this issue is resolved or I'm changing since there are better deals around at the moment

If i was you id check what speed your modem is set to download at. Ive got the 4mb with VM and noticed i couldnt get download speeds above 230. My modem suddernly went from 4mb to 2mb all they said was its a technical fault.

Took them 3 weeks to put me back onto 4mb

how do you check that?

by the way I am going through a router but the speeds do not change even with the router disconnected completely or only me on the network.

I am the computer the router is connected to so I am the main terminal in the network

I suddenly remember reading some people handle caffine better than others :D

Go to 192.168.100.1 depending on your modem the layout will be different however you are looking for a config file that will be shown as cm-10240-384 or similar (that's 10mbit, yours will be 4096-384 iirc). If it's not a 4mbit config then it's a simple fix, if it is check the connection isn't limited by the server you are downloading from - i'd run thisspeed test as it tests us/uk/international servers and is a hell of a lot more reliable than your average web based test.

While it's running take deep breaths and meditate or something, if you get this worked up over a slow internet connection god knows what your like if something major happens :)

i've done all that stuff you have suggested. thanks for that, i am grateful honestly.

miraculously though my speed has been increasing all day. was around 1.5 before now around 2.3 megabytes per second. shall wait and see. my ping did seem annoyingly high though, which is why i am guessing my internet gaming has been rubbish on another level!

May have been a localised issue on your UBR but keep an eye on it, if it's still a problem tomorrow call tech support and log it, if your friends are having the same issue get them to do the same.

well it seems that Virgin have sorted out whatever problem they had or whatever the problem was with my connection.

Everthing is as it should be (4MB config).

Downstream 3984KBps
Upstream 363KBps.

:D

Thanks for everyone's input :)

My connection never sees above 600 - 700kbps at the minute despite me paying for a 10Mb connection, and this has just started in the last 2-3 weeks. Previously I was getting 1200kbps all the time and without a hitch. Seems to coincide well with the transfer over to Virgin. I'm going to stick it out for another week perhaps, but if it's still playing up after that I'm going to kick up a fuss of some shape or form.

and i do see a download speed of a solid 1.4 mb on DLds, some good FTP servers i see 1,7
