I had the Crash Course team in yesterday which consisted of a fireman, road accident policeman, victim support & a woman who went through a windscreen and had 13 operations to rebuild her face.
The class was 30 x 16 year old students and when they had finished there wasn't a dry eye in the room including my own.
The most harrowing stories were from victim support who told one story about a womans 3 month old baby who had gone through a windscreen at 70 mph and the only bit they found was a foot.
The rest of the baby had been swilled by the firemen down the grids in the road :(

Anybody else done this 2 hour course and what effects did it have on you?

Ive seen a simular one at school, but it was only a small car crash and some acting.

These four came in with a DVD showing crash scenes with peoples limbs + heads ripped off.
There was also crash test dummy scenes and other assorted films/pics from when the firemen/police have been out.
In between clips each one would step in and say something.
It was the first time I've had a completely silent class for 2 hours.
They showed one where a car was on top of a dead body and it was in a position where it wasn't spotted for 11 hours.
The driver had died from suffocating and on the floor were all his ripped off nails where he had tried to drag himself out from under the car.

I had the same woman telling the story about the babies foot. It was either the course or 3 points for talking on my phone whilst driving. People were there for various offences. It was at the fire station in Stone.

I think before passing your driving test you should have to sit a course like this. You do not realise what damage can happen internally on your organs when you have a crash and the hurt to families you can cause. The sudden deceleration in speed is what causes most deaths, they even went on to say how the main aorta artery detatches and you bleed to death internally. When I was 17 I never even thought about any consequences driving like a t**t can cause.

Why not make it a compulsory course you have to pay for like the theory test.

We had 2 courses like this in sixth form, one each year. The fire brigade came in and showed us pictures and videos from car crashes. Since where I was had one of the worst road death rates anywhere in Britain I thought it was a great idea, and I certainly think it should be shown in every school. It just shocks you into realisation that the car you drive is a killing machine.

odd, I went on the same one then, and there was nothing like that on it ?

some stuff about what's the right thing to do in certain situations and a driving test with an old guy, who had a fit if you didn't depress the knob on the handbrake before pulling it up ;)

which probably shows how little I remembered then :o

Had the exact same crash course with the same people last year.
It annoyed me in the way that they acted as if everyone in the room is guilty, for example they asked people to put their hands up if they'd been in a car with a drunk driver, over the speed limit and if they'd been in a car without wearing seatbelts and every time acted arrogantly and were like "Yeah sure, I bet a lot more people in this room can vouch for that" and seemed to implicate that we're all a bunch of lying tossers, even if the majority of hands were in the air. They say that it's "not to put us off driving" whereas the way that they put their points across it quite obviously is.
Apart from that the videos, pictures and stories didn't really have much of an effect, though quite a few people were in tears at the end and even a teacher or two walked out.
Though I still haven't learnt to drive yet I doubt that what the crash course showed me will have any effect as to the manner in which I'll drive in the future.

There was one cracking bit of advice for passengers who have tried to get a driver to slow down in a scary situation.
In fact when I got in last night my youngest daughter had been in with a ******** who'd scared the poo out of her and he wouldn't slow down either when she asked him.
Anyway, the advice is - pretend you're going to be sick because there isn't a driver in the world that will want you puking up in their car.
(of course this isn't applicable to a stolen car)
