Hey all, hit some ice at 30, panicked and binned it :(
Hit a hedge (those ones that have been there for hundreds of years). Was like hitting a wall

Poor polo took it well, pics below. Had to remove the front wing from the tyre with a sledgehammer but apart from that I drove it home.

Need a new car now, what can I get for around £1k?

Ouch!

I'd go for a Fiesta too... had one as my first car and it was excellent for the money I paid. £500 and kept me going for ages.

You can't deny they pull like a train, spesh if you don't get the pov spec and have an intercooler. But yes they are made like crap. I went to view a ZR TD and my old 400 was built better...

I can deny it, the intercooled one is better but the non-IC is horribly flat and asthmatic. I'll agree with you on the older boxy shape ones, much more agreeable.

Driven one?

Yes, awful things. You can tell right away that it was built on the cheap, not only the uncomfortable and constantly creaking interior but the oily bits too. We'll gloss over the K series HGF disaster though, something more obvious is the dodgy free-play in the steering when in a dead-ahead position, this has been evident in all three that I've driven so it's not a one-off thing.

Just, no.

We're talking comparative terms here, like to a 1.25 Zetec, not whatever repmobile you drive :p

My 400 was an R plate new shape, and my current is a V reg new shape (both 400s) and I've had none of the problems above. Then again, they are heavily based on the Civic.

:)

Edit: I had a K series for 20k miles and had no issues, guess I got lucky. One of the reasons I got shut was for the HGF issue, while although exaggerated was still a problem.

But, your comparing it to the immense pulling power of a train?

It's an expression, obviously :p

105BHP and 210Nm of torque in a small car like that does give it some oomph when needed, although yes, the interior build quality does lack in areas. I've not ventured into the engine side of one, only on my 400s which presumably aren't much different.

The OP wanted a good, reliable car for under £1k, and that is what a 200 of the derv variety would be.

They regularly hit well over 200k before they're scrapped, and are good on fuel and insurance. I don't see the problem?

Good as it's irrelevant

Same as a Honda Integra Type R then. Most Hondas/Rover have a dead spot in the centre.

This is a sub £1000 car, certainly as good as the other recommendations
