Crashes to desktop when gaming

Hi all,

Need some help if possible as I don’t know what to do now. I built my latest PC a month ago. To be honest I haven’t got round to using it much as I have been busy renovating my house. Last few weeks things have calmed down though so have been able to spend a few hours here and there on it.

I am experiencing the games crashing back to desktop randomly. Sometimes it will happen quite quickly, sometimes I can be on it for 3 or 4 hours before it happens. Usually get no warning, no stuttering etc, just shuts the game down and goes back to desktop. Last night I was playing Warhammer 3 and the battle froze and it crashed to desktop.

It has done it since the PC was built, all parts were new, mostly from here, some form somewhere else if overclockers didn’t have it in stock.

As far as I can tell, all drivers are up to date, I updated the bios the other day and thought that had solved it, but obviously not. I have run Heaven and left it running for an hour with no issues.

Games it has crashed in have been Red Dead Redemption 2 a this is the worse one, Spider-Man, Warhammer 3 and Football Manager ( not a particularly demanding game gpu wise).

What else can I do/try? I’m not massively technical when it comes to PC’s so be gentle please. Thanks

Hello there, I have a similar issue in the thread below this though with mine - I get BSODs instead of crashes back to the desktop. First thing - can you please list your specs and OS? And what 3rd party apps do you have running in the background?

Do you know if your temps are OK in the lead up to the crashes (HWinfo is a good app)? How do you update your GFX card drivers? Install over or use something like DDU to do a clean install, this method has caused me recent issues.

What seemed to fix it for me was reseating and replugging things like the GFX card, memory sticks, power cables into the mobo. Let us know some more details and we can hopefully troubleshoot :).
Hi, yeah, I had started to read your thread.

So I have:

Ryzen 5 7600x
Corsair RM850x
Lian li Galahad 360 AIO
Samsung evo 970 plus nmve
Corsair dominator platinum 32gb DDR5 5600mhz
Asus Prime X670-E pro wifi
Saphire rx6800 xt nitro plus

Running windows 11 home, as far as I know all up to date.

I will check 3rd party apps when I get home, but I tried to shut everything down from running when I started to get this issue. I update the gpu via the AMD Adrenalin app. The rest of the drivers I used CCleaner Pro and that updates things. The bios I downloaded the flash from Asus and updated it via the flashback.

No, to be honest I don’t have anything to measure the temps when it crashes, will look at that when I get home.

As I said I have stopped all 3rd party apps from starting up when the pc boots, so really just steam if it is a steam game or rockstar for RDR2.

The only other thing I have is a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse so guess that must use an app to keep them connected?

How do I check the frequency and voltage of the ram please. Sorry, as I said I can plug things together but I have no idea how to do that!

Oh dear. Download the drivers, back everything up, do a clean install of Windows and install all the drivers properly. Use HWInfo to check temperatures.

Other things to try: RAM, as @Tetras suggests, try running the RAM with EXPO / XMP disabled, and check that the CPU cooler is mated properly with the CPU.

HWinfo will tell you that, but it's set in the BIOS.
Hi. I will try what you have said, I’m willing to try anything at this point.

However, I have only downloaded CCleaner in the last week once I had updated GPU drivers etc and was still crashing.

For education why shouldn’t you use a 3rd party update program?

So, realistically what drivers do I need to update and download out of my hardware?

Obviously GPU comes direct from AMD anyway. Ram doesn’t have drivers (they don’t do they?). The motherboard I downloaded direct from ASUs and used the flashback. Is there anything else I should be updating? Windows does itself obviously.

Yep, I got the temperatures, am running sensors only now and have CPU and GPU temps running.

Am currently playing WH3 which seems to be the worse game for crashing when I get into big battles, will report the temps when/if it crashes.

Hi all,

So, just as an update to this then I decided to take the PC in to a local-ish PC shop. They have been going for years and I have used them a few times in he past for various bits.

They tested it, the worse game I was finding was Warhammer 3 - constant crashes. They found the same. They have isaolated the fault to the Ram being faulty. Now, hopefully this makes sense to some of you more than me, I guess I just want reassurance here: They said the RAM had passed some tests they done on it but it was still faulty. They have changed the RAM for identical sticks and had the PC running Warhammer 3 and other games now for 1.5 days with no crashes.

In my mind then, the RAM is faulty. But, if it is passing every test how do I RMA it? The RAM was bought from here btw, not that makes any difference, but surely whoever it was bought from is going to test it and it will pass and they will just say it isn't faulty, won't they?

Right, update on this.

PC shop had it for nearly 2 weeks. They came to the conclusion that the RAM was fine. They ran another PCIE cable to the GPU, I had just used 1 cable with the spilt into two. They had it benchmarking Warhammer 3 for 6 days with no crashes.

So, I collected Saturday. Played Spider-Man for half hour and crashed to desktop. Constant crashes in both Spider-Man and Warhammer throughout the weekend.

Today I re installed windows 11 and only updated the gpu and cpu via their respective sites. No extra programs added just those. Reinstalled steam and installed Spider-Man. Still crashing.

At this point I am not sure now what to do. The PC shop said to bring it back and they would continue to look at it. It does seem to be, say in Spider-Man if you die and it tries to reload the last save, or in Warhammer when you exit a battle back onto the main map.

I can’t get the PC back to the shop until the weekend, does anyone have any ideas what I can do now or try? Don’t suppose anyone is local to me (Cambridge area) that would be willing to look - I would willingly pay, I’m just at the end of my options with this.

Thanks.

Thanks. I have re set to Windows 10 - will try it later on today.

My plan is, if it is still crashing, go from a display port cable to hdmi cable to connect to the monitor. Still crashing at that point I will then connect to my tv via hdmi. Still crashing I will then re paste the cpu and reseat the ram, the gpu and the SSD (nvme).

I guess if it is still crashing at that point, with software (2 operating systems) rules out, and monitor rules out, the reseating of everything, I am then looking at some hardware being faulty?

Three other things to try:

Try putting the PC on another power circuit or putting in a power filter / UPS. If there's something that intermittently draws a lot of power (e.g. a fridge) then that can cause issues.

Try using the PC somewhere else in the house. This is to check for EMI. If you have something unshielded that's putting out EM radiation, again it can cause random crashes. You don't live underneath or near a powerline, do you?

Do you generate static electricity? What carpet do you have?
Hi. Don’t live underneath or near a power line, no.

We have just had the carpet changed. Used to have laminate flooring in the living room and have gone to carpet now. Happened with both.

I will try the others you suggested after what I have done. Just going back though, the PC is on the same place, and plugged into the same plug socket my last one was in. I get that doesn’t mean we don’t have an issue, but thought it less likely?

Okay, so just had a crash again in Spider-Man. This time it reset the pc. When it has turned back on I have lost Bluetooth. Can’t connect wireless keyboard or mouse.

If I go into Bluetooth and other devices, I can see the keyboard and mouse are there, but they state Bluetooth is turned off. There is no option to turn it back on.
