Crashing... but only in a certain game.

Hey all, got a problem that I hope you can help me with.

About a month ago I started getting random crashing while playing World of Warcraft. It's odd in that it's the only game in which it happens - I play C&C3, UT3, NFS Carbon, to name but a few and i've never had any problems with them.

It can happen anywhere in the game, but the framerate will stall, then the sound will stutter and stutter gradually until it's just frozen totally. Nothing will bring it out at all except a reset.

I thought it was my X-Fi doing it so I took it out and although it stopped for a week or so, it's started doing it again.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, 8 hours Orthos/8 hours Memtest all passes fine.

Have you connected a 6-pin and 8-pin connector to the card?

6-pin and 6-pin as that's all I have.

Further to your post in my other thread, i've managed to keep it looping for 8 hours in 3DM06 without issue.

So now i'm really stumped.

I wish Windows or whatever is causing this is a bit more descriptive, rather than just halting the system. Is there a way to tell?

Moderate load, but not 100%. This was taken after an instance run as well.

To add to it.

- NEVER happens in instances, in flight, or while i'm in combat.
- Tends to happen more frequently in a city, especially Shattrath.

Nah, afraid not. Using the 8.5s (although the 8.4s and 8.3s do the same) with CCC.

Disabling CCC doesn't help.

was havign similar problems in eq2 - forces sync with refresh seemd to have helped some.

Vsync and triple buffering are both on otherwise I have a bit of texture tearing.

I'll turn them off and see what happens.

Didn't fix it.

Will try that Chronic. :)

[Edit] It's not there. :/

Okay, i've played around with network settings, video settings, and WoW settings.

Nothing makes any difference.

Please? Anybody have any suggestions at all?

I do use addons, and i've tried it without them. It doesn't make any difference. :(

I've taken the extreme step of a total re-install. Will post back if it makes any difference.

Did you resolve this in then end?

Was just coming to post.

It worked okay for about a day, then it started doing it again.

Desperation reached a new high and even though I had just reinstalled it, I tore XP x64 off and put XP x86 back on.

It still does it.

I put Vista x64 on. Still does it.

So that's three complete reformats and it's still doing it. I've been watching temps and it's really not that high - E8400 hitting about 65C on load. X2 is running about 80C on load.

Is there anything, anything at all I haven't tried? :(

The temperature doesn't get hot enough though. It's only being reported as 80C, even when fully loaded.

I think it's a Crossfire issue with WoW. I don't see what else it could be. Giving it some thought, it did start around 2.4 going live - my educated guess is that the patch broke something.

After talking to a friend of mine who says he had the same problem and that a move to Vista solved it, I cracked out my HP x64 DVD and began installing... again. :o

It installed, then I went to put SP1 on. It just froze during the install. I tried again. Same thing. So I got the redist - and it won't boot, just gets stuck on "configuring updates".

Great.

Right, i've got Vista going again.

Here's the crunch - it's started crashing in Vista, with the same symptoms. Sound freezes, then the responsiveness follows a couple of seconds later.

So it must be hardware right?

How come it still passes Orthos/3DM06 stress tests with Vista running then?

*tears clumps of hair out*

I think i'll sell the board when I get it back off RMA anyway. I don't use half it's features.
