Crashing in games, lost for ideas!

OS reinstall. Quick install on a spare old HD would be *much* preferable to losing your configured OS that may not be at fault. I'd be tempted to take the comp to bits and resemble it, but once you have actually made the decision, installing a minimal OS + game etc takes literally < 1/2hr of your time in front of the screen if you are organised.
Next step is to get a friend to test the card if that doesnt work.
With the symptoms having always been there but getting worse, I think you are faffing about doing anything else. Install the test OS with the minimum level of **** attached, such as peripherals as possible as others have said.
