Crashing in games, lost for ideas!

i used to have problems like this one where it will be stable in tests but not in games.
I cured it by upping the MCH (north bridge) a little bit,

Was it the same problem as what I have though? The computer itself works fine afterwards, only the graphics driver is no longer alive.

I'm tempted to take the plunge and use this as an excuse to upgrade to Vista, as a fresh install with all new drivers should do the trick.

Haven't tried as of yet, but will give it a go now. It's only a mild overclock (3.0) on CPU and I dropped the RAM to below stock last night.

Will try now and post back.

Well I've decided to use this as an opportunity to upgrade to Vista 64, and another 2GB of RAM. If it still has problems after, then I know it's hardware related.

Did you try to remove the wireless card? Whats the point asking for help if you dont take the advice ;)

Are you getting the "atimkdag has recovered from an error" message? If so are you running dual monitors under vista when this happens ? There is an issue with this if thats the case that can cause random crashing.

Although I have heard even single monitor users get this error and crash also, I've never seen any definative fix apart from going back to windows XP. However if your not running vista then I dont know :(

a amte was getting a similar issue (with totally different hardware) and after upping his ram by 0.5 v over what it was rated at and updating to BETA drivers it seems to have gone away. Could have been either but he cba to test to find out.

0.5v over on the RAM!? Mine's rated and running at 2.1v, putting it at 2.6v is certain suicide.

I've tried all drivers from 8.3 up to the newest 8.6s and they all have the same effect.

Hmmmm...

Try one more thing yet. Just make sure you do all of it at same time ( not trying 1 by 1 ).

Reset BIOS settings to stock default, then, increase the CPU voltage to 1.35v, increase the ram voltage to 2.1v (on stock settings), disable the C1E and speedstep.
Before you do that, remove any PCI or additional USB hardware you got ( soundcard / network card / usb sticks / usb camera whatever ).

Also when you will be opening the case, check all the cabling on your way and make sure it holds well.

If that doesn't help I got no idea what's happening.

i mean 0.05 :D its rated at 2.1v but its not running at 2.15v
I was distracted by thinking about the steak i was going to have lol

Had exactly the same problem with my 4850 useing 8.6 drivers. Scree freeze / black screen - no sound - no messages / somtimes vpu recovery - have to restart comp.

Basicly i un-installed all the ATI drivers in Windows Safe Mode useing driver sweeper, then re-installed my PCI Standar PCI-to-PCI bridge (can be found in device manager under system devices) select installed from a selected source then the 'dont search, il chose option' and it should auto find it, takes afew secs to re-install. Boot back into windows and re-install Cat 8.6 and it should work.

Not sure if my situation is 100% similar to yours though sorry :(
