Hello All, I am a freelance web designer and decided to make the jump to a mac, I got the mac mini as I am not keen on laptops and wanted to see how i got on with a mac so didn't want to get a 27" imac just yet.

I got the mid 2010 model with 2gb ram and a duel core 2.4ghz processor and I notice it starts to run slow sometimes and today I was copying my photos from my dslr camera and it crashed out.. do you think there is a problem with it? or i should get more ram?

Have you tried the hardware test?
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

This can check to see if it's a hardware problem.

Another point is that it's running slow - if everything is slowing down it could be the hard drive is on it's way out. I'd backup any important files now just to be sure.

You can verify the hard drive using the tools on the OSX disc: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417

Is the mini second hand? They many not have inserted the memory properly if they've been using 4GB bought second hand.

If it's a mid 2010 model it can take 8GB.. I'm looking at that for my Jan'10 mini (the last 9400M version).

Alternatively you could book it into a genius bar and let them find out what's wrong.

Thanks Nick,

I have not but I will try that a bit later, I hope it isn't as its a brand new one that I got for xmas, My dad is going to get hes mate to jump on by teamviewer and take a look as he is a mac engineer so should be able to find the problem, do you think I should try and reseat the ram?? If it is a Ram problem I think I will grab the 8gb kit as its £88 or maybe just get the 4gb kit?

Only other thing I can think of is that it's indexing - does the magnifying glass (spotlight icon) have a pulsing dot in the centre of it? If so then it's indexing and once done it will be fine.

OSX will work with 2GB. It's a bit leaner than Windows as it doesn't support so many previous versions. I have 4GB now and it's fine. The only reason for 8GB is I'm considering using it for astronomy photography which means taking tens of images and then stacking them to gain additional information (so if you imagine 30 uncompressed pictures loaded at once).

lol wish they did, and thanks nick I think in future im going to wear a mask when i go out lol I have never felt so bad.
