Hi,

Looking at backing up my home server, a few hundred GB for my documents / photos / music and then slowly add more data to it over time.

Someone here has recommended I get Crashplan, just wondered what you guys thought about it, and if there are other alternatives which are better ?

Thanks,

I think Crashplan is pretty much the standard go-to solution for online backup, both in terms of features and value for money. They also modestly claim to be contributing towards "mankind's latest exploration of our galaxy" - http://crashplan.com/blog/enterprise_backup/nasa_has_a_crashplan

My only slight niggle from my (admittedly limited) testing is that the client can be a bit of a memory hog, but with a reasonably modern PC I doubt if it's a major concern.

I've already got a server at home ( WHS 2011 ) with folder duplication.

And then got another WHS which I copy to once a month or so. Main worry is if I lose both servers ( theft / house fire !! etc ) nice to put all my data securely in the cloud.

Just wondered what speeds people get with Crash plan, upload and download.

I use BackBlaze, can't fault it. At $5 a month it would take me a lot of months to recoup the cost of my own NAS box.

why not get a nas drive/little server, with owncloud? At least you will have control of your own data, and no monthly fee :)

Because the backup won't be in the 'cloud'.

I'm with LiveDrive for now. I was with Mozy which was better but they wanted too much £££ :(

Can you use crashplan free edition with a server with owncloud (and map network drive via httpS and WebDAV? I'll test it out tonight when I get back home.

To add, in light of Tomsk's post, I have my server on vidahost cloud servers (which I use for other stuff and emails). So it would make sense for me to use the vidahost cloud server as they are located in uk and I'm paying for the space.

Won't you be using up your data transfer allowance?

I've never measured the download or upload speed of my LiveDrive backup. I'm just content that it's working in the background.

I recently had to re-install Windows 7 on my PC and as a result I had to backup everything again. I can't remember exactly how long it took, but I left my PC on for about 5 days and all my ~630GB was backed up. I have a FTTC connection running at roughly 55 down/15up Mbits/sec.

Running Crashplan in addition to my Synology NAS. Tried it and was impressed, so I bought a two year licence.

I'm using Virgin Media with a 6mb/s upload. Crashplan lets me control the upload speed so I don't breach Virgin's AUP. I normally have it set at 1mb/s or 2mb/s upload but it will go to the full speed if I remove the limitation. The Android app is also useful for accessing docs uploaded to Crashplan on my S4.

I've been using Crashplan for about 12 months, bought a 3 years subs to it as it was stupidly cheap at the time. I've got about 450Gb backed up on it (on dodgy Sky ADSL).

Pros:
Offsite backup
client isn't a hog when backing up, it's running 24/7 on my main PC and I game whilst it's backing up..
Additional local automated encrypted backup to HDD on my PC.
Client is nice and easy to configure, supports multiple drives etc.

Cons:
Slow upload although download speed for restoring is very good.
Swapping motherboard etc and reinstalling Windows? Be careful as you can swap the backup to the new PC, you need to ensure you adopt the backup first time or you could lose it and have to start at the beginning.

Tiny con and slightly amusing..

I find the client is a little too keen to start backing up small changes, I backup a folder on my desktop and had accidentally unzipped a file into it, this was backing up 5 seconds later as i tried to move it to a temp folder.. ended up having to snooze Crashplan so I could do so as it had already started backing up to the cloud :)

I love the service, it and Lastpass/Keepass are the two things I recommend to friends and family as absolute essentials. I just wish there was more competition.

OP, have you decided to go for anything? I'm pondering this myself and I do like the idea of crashplan as I can use my Synology NAS to do the backup, I've read several blogs and it looks easy enough to set up.

I'm rebuilding my server with 2012 and want to back the server up to a cloud...Anyone got any vouchers or ecoupons for crashplan?
