Recently noticed Doom3 slowing down to a crawl when smoke effetcs were around and now C&C3 TW is doing the same at random parts of a mission

Spec:
E6600 @ 3.1ghz
2gb pc2-6400 g.skill ram
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX

Running the games at 1680x1050 with full eye candy but the spec should be able to handle that, even my brothers lower spec machine can do this

Its not just a little slow down its a huge drop to a crawl from perfectly smooth running the moment before

I've had similar problems with regards to anti-aliasing and slowdowns, I mean juddering and slow motion style characters but normal fps. Not sure if they could be connected problems, happens with explosions too, the slowdown effect.

Silly question perhaps, but how do you get that res with Doom3, I don't get the option for it :(

Edit - thx for replies to that and sorry for semi-hijack

Change these in the config file

seta r_customHeight "1050"
seta r_customWidth "1680"
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_aspectRatio "2"

what it is m8 is your total computer :(
heres the cure.
box all your computer up cpu,gfx card, mem etc send it to me ill look at it then send your a transformed computer containing a
4400x2 dual core cpu
a cream krackered 7900gs
1 gig of generic ram

:)
pm me for details :P

I get the same in CS source online, only about 10 players and even the biggest maps still can drop below 40FPS

i thought this card was a monster :o and on a game thats over 2 years old yet..

lmao sounds tempting :p

Just to add, I've started to get this exact problem. Not in Doom3, that used to be fine. But now in C&C3, with those levels in Italy I think it goes down to an absolute crawl over my tiny base, then when I pan the camera away it's silky smooth again. SO ANNOYING and I can't seem to find out what's causing it.

Spec in sig.

Temps fine, no throttling.

PSU - 700w OCZ model.

Running the 160.02 drivers (similar to the latest 158.27 drivers) and I always use DriverCleaner.

Reinstalled DirectX.

Only have my AV running in the background (Nod32)

Hard Disks nice and defraged. (Raptor and 7200.10)

The only thing similar to the OP and me is the PSU and the graphics card make (Nvidia). That's it.

You would know by the high pitched wine where its clinging on to dear life under strain, well thats what my old PSU did towards the end of 3 years service, soon shut down pc and changed it the moment i heard unhealthy sounds under load. :)

Funny you should mention that. Mine, when I run 3DMark06 gives a high pitch electrical squeel. Sounds weird, quite faint, at first I thought it was coming from my speakers but it wasn't. Only does it in 3DMark06 yet I get no slowdown in that, good score also. Also, I haven't noticed any other games acting funny either and C&C3 ain't really graphically punishing as other games I play.

I don't know what to do really, could wait and see if perhaps it gets worse?!

Ive ran driver cleaner and have the most up to date drivers installed

The PSU isnt making any noise, all components are less than 3 months old

Score just over 11600 in 3Dmark06

High pitched whine/squeel is a moderately common occurance with complex ICs now I'm afraid :( Its pot luck whether u get one that does it and/or when it occurs. My 7900GTX used to emit it only during the Stalker menu, but after a while stopped making it even then. Had it with some P4s, the odd other graphics card. Varies in loudness too, so usually only people with quiet PCs / laptops notice it :)

If it IS coming from the PSU, then that is definitely a problem. And would also explain why you get slowdown, if an NV GPU can't get enough power it downclocks itself.

Like I said here , same subject. Could be lots of things, VRM's, a cheap choke coil vibrating, or even an electrolytic cap squealing with frequency change.

A few of them do it.

I've done two small FRAPS video's of the problem. Much easier to see what happens.

Now it's clear that it's not my rig "un-able to handle the settings", as it's the same for the OP as well, who has a GTX and a C2D CPU. Away from where it sticks there is a nice battle going on and it's super smooth, as you'll see. Now if it were a problem with settings it would bog down here also with the action, but it does not. It is only around the base with the lighting effect.

Video 1.

Start off looking away from my base, nice and fluid. As soon as I hit the base, super slow. My FPS dove from the fixed 30 to around 12. Never happend on any other level, until the lighting came into play. Look at the cursor when I select a position for the units to move, flashes really slowly.

Video 2. (Better one)

This shows the battle. No problems at all with all the action. You see near the end how when I scroll up the screen, the FPS suddenly rockets back up. Now this is only related to that lighting that I can see, and this part of the game. On other levels it was absolutely fine.

I think it's either a driver bug or software glitch to slow down like that so unexpectedly, for two different rigs and for two different people.

I've noticed that Smoke can cause sometimes cause MASSIVE slowdowns on Nvidia hardware when you have AA enabled in the past - even as far back as when I was running Need For Speed: Underground on a ti4200. I'm guessing that with some types of smoke rendering, huge amounts of AA calculations have to take place or something when you have a lot of particles being displayed ...
