Crazy Tesco

The open fridges make it easier for consumers to consume at whim on products they don't need, which I guess has always been a factor. Before the increases in energy cost, I guess that just had a higher weighting. But now they own all that equipment, changing over existing stores won't be cheap or green

Those supermarket roofs are a big ol space for solar as well. Almost like upfront cost is a factor...

Cold air is more dense so will settle in the chest. If you put a door on it, that is basically a huge fan which will waft the cold air out each time it's opened and replace it with warmer air.
I suspect that the difference in energy use between an open chest freezer and one with a door is not as big as you'd think.

Surely though they wont be opened during the hours they are closed and that would negate that difference?

Obvious Jest, frozen smileys.

What does the door actually do? Just keep the cold air in place? If the cold air is being kept in place anyway by its weight then would a door make much difference?

Well that's a odd google rabbit hole to end up in, i searched google images for any funny freezer aisle pics and ended at some reddit section for braless women with pointy nips.

:D

There's a lot of serious discussion going on in here about the efficiencies of freezer designs and associated cold air removal systems!

*edit*

I removed the link as i don't think the Mods will allow it even though they have tops on, put this in google search "Feeling free shopping at our local HT. The freezer aisle was exhilarating"

Just for research purposes.

:)

couple of my local supermarkets still have those big ole chest type freezers that are permanently open (no actual lid) i imagine those cost a fortune to run.
I was thinking the same...only open fridges but thinking about it there's a whole aisle of open freezers in my local Tesco, bags of chips etc in them. Turkey's at Xmas!

I agree that doors should be on all supermarket chillers. It will annoy the customers and shop floor workers. 4

The other week, I was in Iceland and one customer didn't bother to lower the lid to the freezers she took items from or checked. Staff member gave her the evil look.

@Thekwango my store has the chest freezers with no lid. They probably take 20-23% of our frozen lines.

And then? Is that the end of this story? Dude come on, you need to work on your story telling skills, that was absolute tosh.

At least finish with "then she and the staff member duelled to the death over the open freezer, the staff member won and chopped the lady's head off and mounted it to the freezer door with a note saying "close doors or this will be u lol ktnx".

Rubbish.

What if they put those PVC strip curtains over them instead of a door?

I had noticed them in our local Tesco on previous years when it got pretty hot, but not this year. I guess they were stuck in the dilemma between "keeping the cold in the freezers" and "Aaaah! Covid!" :D
