Am I crazy to consider older IPS tech like the LG 34gp950g and Acer Predator X32?

I really dont like the idea of OLED screen burn, issues with VRR - which Gsync native & Gsync ultimate hopefully reduce or completely remove and poor text clarity as do quite a lot of reading.

My Acer X34 has been great but is limited by 100hz refresh rate. If I could upgrade to a similar screen but 175hz or above this would be fine.

I hear gen3 OLEDs are improving quickly so happy to hear recommendations if lack of Gsync module is no issue. 32 or 34” ideally and at least 3440 x 1440. I had considered the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM and Gigabyte AORUS FO32U2P

I have the same monitor as you, great picture and response rate, don't find 100hz limiting, personally.

I will only upgrade to an OLED panel (or better tech if it exists), still waiting for the GEN 3 panels to be released with superior text quality and burn-in protection, didn't think they had been released yet.

Really rate the picture on mine, and wouldn't consider changing for anything less than OLED or better.

If you're okay with VA mini led panels you might want to look at the TCL 27r83u, I've had it for a week now and it's the best display I've seen yet, playing cyberpunk in HDR is mind-blowing.
Isnt this only 27" and AMD Freesync only? Im looking for something at least 32" (as my current monitor is 34" so feel going back to 27 wil look tiny) Gync or something newer that holds up to Gsync for gaming, mainly Warzone.

Id did find a ewview on reddit, plus this guys comments - https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcmonitors/comments/1d0i5ei/comment/l8pourl/

Honestly, yes, if the concerns are ‘burn in’ and VRR flicker. These things are much less relevant on newer OLEDs. You’ll have seen my comments on the 27” PG27UCDM in the other thread.

If you can stomach waiting, I would wait until a new 32” panel comes out that resolves issues the same way that the new 27” panels seemingly have. The 32” models out next year (probably) will likely be brighter, leaving everything else in the dust, if that’s the size you have your heart set on.

As an aside, I would be very wary of the impact of the additional height that a 32” 16:9 will bring - it can make a huge difference to comfort and I expect it will feel a lot bigger than your 34” 21:9.

Have a play around with this tool to get an idea.

But they do seem to still be an issue. The VRR flicker in particular was a bit of a deal breaker for me. I was seriously considering the Alienware AW2725DF. But for that sort of money there shouldn’t be any caveats surely.

VRR flicker mostly occurs at low frame rates or when frame rates wildly fluctuate. Avoid both, with a newer gen panel, and the issue should be reasonably mitigated.

Admittedly I’m only into a week of ownership but I am yet to encounter VRR flicker on my PG27UCDM whilst in game. In a menu, yes, I have seen it. The model supposedly has newer technologies to help combat this, but it’ll never be able to cope with wild FPS swings. Setting a sensible fps cap and avoiding chugging 1% lows should help avoid this.

Obviously you’ll need a pretty meaty GPU / CPU to mitigate against these issues as best as you can.

Ill have a look into that model. Ive got a 7800X3D/7900xtx combo so a decent amount of horsepower. At the moment im playing CS2 but i do dabble in a bit of RDR2/CP2077 etc.

They do have a curved 34" version which I think is the same panel. I've never had g-sync before so I'm not sure what the differences are but the freesync works fine with my 4090.

There's a pretty in-depth Japanese Review that I read before buying, there's a few annoyances like using local dimming in windows can look weird but for me it's the best option until they figure out the brightness issues of OLED, I did try it against the 32GS95UV W-OLED before retuning it as it just wasn't bright enough for me, the new QD-OLED's maybe better though. I wouldn't worry too much about burn in if you go down the OLED route, I've had an LG B9 OLED tv for over 5 years and it's still perfect.

I've had no issues with text clarity on the 32GS95UV-B, and wouldn't worry about burn in unless you're being silly with it.

Text clarity on this looks great, but VRR issues?
Every monitor I look at there seems to be something wrong with them.
Looking a few years ago at IPS in the 'premium' area (£900+) there were no negatives...or at least not many at the time that people knew about.

You have two options, really:

(1) get one of the new 27” OLED monitors and see how you get on with the size and VRR; or

(2) wait for newer 32” panels.

As mentioned in the 27” thread, I’ve not experienced VRR flicker except in a menu on RDR2 (frames were 40ish for some reason).

@Nitefly I have the option of getting a Gsync ultimate 34" 3440 x 1440 180hz IPS screen for £350. Tempting as a sidegrade and maybe get a bit of money back for my Acer X34 (maybe £100 or so)

Which model is that? Is it one of the mini-led screens?

Could be worth a punt! The new OLEDs are, comparatively, very expensive. Plus, at 1440p that will be much easier to push. At the same time… if you’ve already got a 50 series card or are planning to, I think 4k is the way forward, personally. Or you’d want something with a higher max refresh rate.

What you could do is buy the OLED that looks like it best suits you that you hope to keep, all things considered, and return it if you don’t like it… as long as you aren’t treating it like a ‘try before you buy’, which is taking the mick a bit, I think this is OK (you should expect to pay postage return though and have the risk associated with any unwanted return process, of course).

No standard IPS, LG ultragear - https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/13c72326

Buying new id only buy off Amazon now, just because the returns process is so good. Any dead/stuck/green/red pixels and it would be going back.
