I run a business that does I.T. support, sometimes for local schools. I thought I'd get CRB checks sorted so that we're covered and it looks good for us. YOU CANT !!! I have called CRB and they say the request has got to come from the school for us to be checked, we have to then pay for this BUT it doesnt cover us for any other school. If we then get asked for a CRB from another school we have to re-do the paper work and then repay again.

Talk about license to print money, oh and I'm now a govenor at another school so there's another I need to do.

WHAT A LOAD OF C%^P

<END RANT>

That doesnt sound right. Surely it applies to all schools once you're checked. I work for a video production company and had to have a CRB check in case i went on shoot. That applies for anywhere.

Interesting but doesn't sound right.

I had a CRB check done by an organisation that manages volunteering - STEMNET. They paid for it and as long as I let them know where I'm going or what I'm doing, I'm free to go to any school I want for workshops/talks/etc.

I have heard that before but Ive also heard that as long as your last one was within 6months it should be able to cover you at other jobs

Nope, it's per employer.

I've been CRB checked to the ends of the earth. Even people who have higher clearance need to have another check before working in schools - even Police Officers.

I work for a business that goes around schools

My boss had to pay about £100 (I think) for a check for each employee

CRB's are payed for my the employer, they are also valid for any other premises you work in.

Mine is still valid for the company I work for anyway but I haven't worked in a School for 2 years.

It's utterly pointless anyway as they quite often **** it up anyway.

I'm down as Miss G|mp for instance!

My wife is a teacher - and so is subject to an enhanced check.
That check however only covers her for the government authority she is currently working in.
So she currently works in Huntingdon, if she decided to change jobs and work for Cambridge she would have to go through the checks again.

well it was the CRB helpline I called and they stated that its per school, when I asked about other schools she said that they "could" agree to use the other schools application but could insist on a new one, either way I cant get the forms from them they have to come via the school.

Don't worry, it's all worth it. The scheme is predicting us from hordes of ravening paedophiles! The cost and burden cannot be questioned!

Presumably, if you are working for a single company who has staff who visit different premesis, you only need one check. However, if you are contracting (for example) you would have to be CRB checked for each premesis?

I work in HR for local government, and I can assure you the advice you were given is correct. A CRB check only covers you per employer, and the school would have to request it, which would come through to a team like the one I work in for processing.

The reason for this is it's a lot easier to keep school checks locally, then for any contracted employees have the school keep them on file. It's the same for vulnerable adults, people working in care homes etc. And the only way to have the system work is to re-check when employment changes or contracts change. CRB renewals are bad enough as it is, keeping them up to date with employee relocation works best.

It took a month for mine to be done for a library job >.> Having said that.. was more like the whole of summer just to get the forms sent to me!

A largely pointless and unnecessary system that doesn't really achieve any meaningful benefit to child protection beyond what could be achieved without a massive taxpayer funded database...
