CRC Errors

So I just installed a fresh copy of Windows XP on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop and went to install Antivira until I began to get loads of CRC errors whilst the exe was unpacking itself. I thought the download got corrupted somehow, so I redownloaded the file but it didn't help.

I then went to extract a RAR file and that too began to give me CRC errors with various files not extracting correctly.

I have no idea what is going on. I read that it may be a RAM poblem, so I took RAM in and out and it hasn't helped. Everything else is going fine, I'm posting from the laptop right now but can't do much else.

Anyone got any ideas as to what is wrong, or will I have to install XP again?

Thanks.

Alright, so it seems it WAS my connection. No idea what was up with it, but all seems well now, downloading and extracting fine.

For the record though, I did indeed run memtest and chkdsk which were both fine.

Seems it was my crappy internet all along!

Well i used to use an app called hkSFV (google it - it's still available to download, but it 'died' yonks ago).

There's loads of MD5 hash generators/verifiers out there, some better than others :D

Cheers, will google-ate it. :D

Oh nice, I've got to go and find them?:p

Hehe well i haven't found the 'perfect' one for me yet, and i dunno what your specific needs are :P

I like hkSFV because it's got these funky features:

- If any files are missing, it'll create 0-byte "dummy files" which makes it easier to see what's missing (same goes for any files which fail the hash check)

- You can queue up several checksums at once

- It'll find any renamed files (v.handy!) and match it with the relevant MD5 etc

I recently moved a crap load of data over to some new TB drives and i'm finding that it's randomly crashing.. which is pretty annoying, because i'll leave it checking files, then come back to find that it failed at a 'random' point.. so I don't even know what's been checked :/

Right now i'm using "ExactFile" http://www.exactfile.com/

Which is okay, but it's still in beta and doesn't have many options (plus it seems to have trouble reading files with funky characters in (i.e. £ etc).
