Sometime this year I'm considering upgrading my PC and converting my PC into a home server. Right now I'm running a few bits and bobs such as game servers, web servers etc from my PC, which I'll migrate when I can. However I'm planning to go Linux for the new server instead of Windows.

I'm thinking of booting up a Linux VM on demand for hosting the game server(s) etc. in the hopes that I could then take that image and stick it on an SSD natively to run as the server.

Is that a pain, and am I just better off waiting before migrating? Last time I tried networking with a VM it was an awful experience, I'm not sure if it's still a PITA with bridging networks etc and forwarding incoming traffic -> My PC -> The VM.
