Hi Guys,

Need some advice on supplements. Ive been going to the gym for a year. Im just under 6FT and have a naturally big frame. Im around 16 stone.

Im naturally strong but also have strength gained from the past year, but do also suffer with excess body fat around my stomach due to poor diet. Because of this, my definition around my arms is pretty poor, though I do look a good shape when dressed...just not naked lol

I go to the gym 3-4 times per week, I do 30mins cardio each time, then spend approx 1 hour on fixed/free weights.

Ive been looking at trying some supplements, read loads of guides but still dont understand what to buy!?

Creatine - So this gives you more muscle power to utiltise in the gym, but wont show gains unless you work hard? Used before workouts?
Whey Protein - To rebuld the muscle faster/better than normal protein foods like chicken etc (also cheaper)? Used after workouts?
Fat Burner - Lots of caffeine etc to improve weight loss? Used daily?

Do I really need to buy all 3!?

The only one id bother with would be whey protein. It dosent do anything faster or better, but its an easy way to get protein immediatly after a workout.

I dont know about you but i couldnt eat a steak 5 minuites after a lifting session and it is cheap.

Supplements are exactly that, to supplement an already ballanced diet with good ratios of protein/carbs/fats.

Hope this helps mate.

Thanks mate, certainly puts things into context. I often have a tin of tuna after a good workout, to at least know theres so much protein being absorbed in my otherwise shoddy diet.

I guesss you can get carried away looking for miracle formulas :D

Yeah mate, if you read some sites youd think it would be impossible to put muscle on without "productx".

Diet is the most important part, as far as protein goes you should be getting roughly 1gram per pound of bodyweight.

Read through the threads here, lots of great advice on diet. Gordy r's sticky has some great advice :)

As has been mentioned. Nail your nutrition before turning to supplements. I would recommend starting with whey powder once you have refined your diet and cut all the crap out :)

Whey protein is a must, I tried creatine and all it did was dehydrate me extremely bad.

creatine is something that essentially increases water retention in muscle, nothing more nothing less. However, the more water in the muscle the more efficient everything in the muscle works. People think it makes them bigger and stronger, it doesn't, the tissue "swells" slightly as it has more water in it assuming you drink more water as you retain more water. When you stop taking it you'll lose that size. However, from the increased efficiency you "can" gain more muscle and work a little harder/longer maybe while you are on creatine so you'd have gained more muscle that will stay while on creatine.

But most people love the stuff because they think the very quick increase in size is all muscle and convince themselves they are instantly stronger. Its worth taking if you don't get much creatine from food which iirc is mostly/exclusive found in red meat, I don't take it but as a vegetarian I'd probably gain more from it than your average meat eater who eats some red meat, and a someone who eats tonnes of red meat probably has excess creatine anyway.

Whey is also a very good protein, you'll absorb more useable protein from 30grams of whey than 30grams of chicken. You don't have to eat whey to gain muscle, neither do you have to consider whey a "supplement" if you want the majority of your protein to come from whey, chicken, lentils or milk it doesn't matter all that much. ok lentils you'd have to eat tonnes of the stuff and not get the same rounded AA profile but you get my point.

just eat your omega's, no matter how you eat, where you get your protein from, how many calories you are on factor in omega fats into your diet, oily fish, or omega pills, take them, your body needs them and our diets/foods have much less in than they used to and is probably the single best "pill" you can take, cheap too and helps almost everything in your body.

no point buying any if your diet is poor and most people only buy whey protein because its cheaper and easier than eating lots of high protein meats
