I have a couple of older programmes which simply won't unpack and install on Win7 64 bit. I understand MS offer the Virtual Machine to home users, but in order to configure it an original Win XP 32 bit disc is needed. My question is, does this have to be a "pure" version of XP or can it be any old disc used goodness knows how many times found gathering dusk in the back of a drawer?

If you're talking about 'XP mode' you can download everything you need from microsoft. I think it depends on which edition of Windows 7 you have though

edit - if you happen to have a spare XP key and disc you can use virtual box and install everything you need. The key you have must match the disc, so XP Home OEM, XP Pro OEM, XP Home Retail and XP Professional Retail are the most common.

XP mode is in pro and ultimate which flavour of windows 7 64 are you running?
Otherwise a virual machine in virtual box may be best if you have a valid XP key.
