Creating a fantasy world from scratch.

Personally, all the great fictional worlds lean heavily on history, even if just a hint.

If you loosely tie your back history into the real world political, trading, culture and geographical realities, its probably easier.
 
In fairness the Game of Thrones books are a classic example of too many characters too many sub plots (which go no where) and too long. You could lose 50% of those books and not change anything essential to the story.

Never mind the TV adaption.
