Wow this is an example of something that should be easy being very hard...

Basically I want to just install and play a collectors edition of Civilization, starting with the first.

I can't because I have a Win 7 64 Pro and it only works within a 32 bit OS.

I've been trying to download a virtual machine copy of XP from Microsofts website but it won't work as I don't have a home version of the OS...

Can anyone give me any tips on how I might get this to work?

Thanks very much!

You're going to need a legitimate license for the OS even if it is in a VM.

not with XP mode.

Installing and using Windows XP Mode

To use Windows XP Mode, you need to download and install Windows XP Mode, which is a fully licensed version of Windows XP with Service Pack 3. You also need to download and install Windows Virtual PC, which is the program that runs virtual operating systems on your computer.

When you install a program in Windows XP Mode, the program becomes available for use in both Windows XP Mode and Windows 7.

if you wanted to use virtualbox or vmware, then you'd need your own licensed copy and media to install it.

Thank you for your replies.

I've used the link above and it tells me:

What should I do now? I've never used a virtual machine before so I'm a bit stuck.

I have an old copy of XP or two that are probably laying around somewhere after I upgraded, do I need to find those out or is there an easier way?

Thanks.

Just a guess but I remember you have to install the 3 "XP Mode" downloads in the correct order - apologies if this doesn't help!

It came up with the same message I uploaded above, I'm going to attempt the three step process again though, fingers crossed.

Ah, that's a pity. I've installed XP Mode a couple of times and I always forget which order to run them in which is why I asked.

Maybe this may help - http://www.migee.com/2012/02/09/virtual-pc-and-update-not-applicable-to-your-computer-on-windows-7/

"1) An easy one. Load up the Installed Programs listing, then switch it over to view updates. Check if there is any listing of Microsoft Virtual PC or anything ending with KB958559. If there are any there, uninstall. Reboot. Run again.

2) A couple of Microsoft employees said the error was caused by network filters (I.e. Client for Microsoft Networks/TCPIP/QoS) reaching maximum. This may be the case as Virtual PC needs to install one for itself. This may have also been my issue because I have VMWare installed which takes up a couple. There is allegedly 8 filters allowed maximum. One way to get around this is to modify the following key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\MaxNumFiltersWindows 7 (again, allegedly) supports a maximum of 14. You may need to adjust this registry setting."
