Trying to breath a bit more life into an ageing desktop!
I've got a Vertex 2 60gb SSD that's spare. Can I use this to create an SSD cache to speed up the computer or will it be no different or not work at all?

Spec:
Q6600 at 3ghz
Asus p5kc board
8gb ddr2
2 x 1tb hdd. 1 for programs, 1 data.

Cheers

your motheboard wont support it,only z68/z77,otherwise you need a special caching ssd with its own caching software

best way is as above with installing the os onto it and use old hdd as storage

I did have it for the os and the plan was for everything else on the hdd in raid. It didn't work. The computer just installed everything on the ssd and it became full, despite various efforts to correct it. So its been returned to a more conventional set up.

I got the ssd cache idea when I looked at crucials website

I had tried that. But despite giving the install path as the raid hdds, it would still install to the ssd. The system is working to be fair. It should last a bit longer until I go for an i7 or i5 set up

you have to install the os onto the ssd, dont include it in your raid array, keep the hdd's in raid for faster speed

an ssd in non raid will beat any raided hdd's

No matter what set up I tried including registry changes, program's would still install and fill up the ssd. Various program's would not install to the raid

You have to click custom when it prompts where to install, then create new folder on your raid drives and whatever program installs there,it auto creates a desktop icon for you

There is no reason why a programe wouldnt install to another drive, when your installing it just chose that drive letter instead of your ssd and it should install.

Ive got a Samsung ssd which has my opperating system and a few main programs, ive also got 5 other harddrives set up as a raid 5 array, all my other programs are installed onto this array and it all works fine.
