hy all.

my networking knowledge isn't the best so if someone could help me out with this.

we have just finished extending the kitchen which is built into the existing extension built maybe 30 years ago. we have always had problems with signal loss in the kitchen so to run the laptop that sits in the kitchen i just ran a powerline from the router upstairs but now that the kitchen is easily double the size of what it used to be my parents are moving things about and adding a tv to the wall.

the laptop has since changed to a chromebook with no ethernet port, the tv is wireless and i am running a firetv stick with kodi. i have tried range extenders in the past but as soon as you walk in the kitchen the signal drops.

what i am looking for is to do this https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/powerline/PLW1000.aspx?cid=wmt_netgear_organic but feel paying £70 for more powerlines just for wifi seems a bit steep. is there anything else i can do?

i have a spare asus rt-n66u router. am i right in thinking i can plug that into the powerline in the kitchen and use as a repeater?

cheers

Alternatives are going to cost more.

The ideal solution would be something like hardwired access points. It sounds like it's a bit late now but really doing any building works would have been an ideal time to run ethernet cables behind the walls.

If the work is complete and you don't want to do anything like that then the netgear kit seems like the best bet. It's cheap compared to replacing all your WiFi with replacement APs.

I don't know that model of Asus but what you want to look for is if it can act as just a wireless access point. If it can then plug it into your existing power line setup and you'll get full strength wifi in the kitchen. If it can't then things like the TP-Link WR802N can be had for less than £20 and will do the job. Won't be the fastest or the best but will do the job enough for most applications.
