Creative comments on X-Fi crackling

Very strange problem. Hope it helps some people. But I'm guessing already if they have a high-end system they'd be running dual channel anywho?

I must say, never had any bother since getting the card. Not like my old Audigy2... that was just a joke.

My x-fi card worked fine on my old nforce2 system but ever since I upgraded to the nforce4 I've had crackling when listening to music and playing games.

I'm already running my memory in dual channel mode so that solution didn't help.
I'd also moved the card to different PCI slots and reinstalled the drivers but no luck.

The only thing that I've found to get rid of the problem is to change to audio creation mode rather than entertainment mode and all the crackles go away.

Have you tried any different BIOS revisions incase that fixes the problem?

I've not because the last time I checked ASUS's site for the latest BIOS, the changelog for my board only fixes stuff that didn't affect me.

However I've just rechecked just now and I've found that a new BIOS was released 2 days ago and it lists these fixes:

1- Enhance PCI / PCIE compatibility
2- Support 7900 Series VGA cards
3- Enhance SATA RAID compatibility

The first fix sounds interesting but I might wait for some experiences from other users first before flashing to the new BIOS.

Thanks anyway for the suggestion. At least I now know there's a new BIOS available for my board!

You can just send Creative an e-mail if you have any problems with x-fi and nf4. They'll either update the firmware or send you a brand new one out with a heatsink on it  . Apparently they really fudged up the x-fi's at first. Bet they really cut down on the testing costs during production.

Having said that, its a stunning card regardless.

The new ones that come with the heatsink are exactly the same as those that don't (Apart from maybe a firmware update). As they have cut manufacturing costs (i'm not sure how this works as I don't know how a chip is produced) the new cards now need a heatsink as they produce more heat.

Heatsink on a sound card  Must be good :D Usually as production advances they reduce the size of chips which leads to less heat not more ?

You would think so, but this is Creative we are talking about :p

It was said on their forums by one of the Customer Support Reps.

What warranty is given on these, now they are more complicated its more likely to go wrong I guess. Can they burn out like a gpu?

Just given the returns policy a quick scan, and by the looks of it there is a 24 month limited warranty on them.

As for burning out.....i'm not sure but I guess its possible with all the 51.1 million transistors it has.
