Greetings all,

I wonder if anyone could help me by answering some questions. I am interested in buying an X-Fi card and was looking at the Xtreme Music one. However I noticed some threads and posts in this forum stating they had problems when they got their cards, like for example not being able to boot at all and many claimed to have had the Xtreme Music.

Now I was wondering if anyone knows if those problem were attributed to some of the early models or something like that and if they have been solved. Since I live outside the UK it would be a little troublesome for me to return a faulty card so was wondering if for example the gamer edition one is a safer purchase.

Just so you know I have the AW9D-MAX mobo.

Thanks in advance, any help at all would be much appreciated.

If you're going to buy the oem one make sure you d'load the cd iso first and use something like alcohol120% to mount it. The oem version i bought came with no drivers at all so i needed the cd to get the thing working.

look on the creative forums. Personally from the number of complaints I wouldn't get a X-Fi, unless I can test it for a week prior to payment.

Well thanks for all the replies everyone.

I decided to go ahead and ordered one. I should be receiving it next Friday, hopefully I won't have nay problems. :)

But I'm curious, what sound cards would be a good alternative as I have always heard that they are the best for gaming, music and movies.

They are the best for gaming, nothing else comes close really.

Sounds like marketing has won you over. The Creative's are best for gaming, but not for actual sound quality.

Agree, though sound quality is still way better than onboard AC97.

The main reason I got mine is because I want to hear those fancy sound effects in the latest games.

it's not because of their marketing campaign but rather cos of my ignorance as i don't know what other cards there are.

But anyway since I'll mostly use it for gaming than in a sense I got the best card :D

It should still be good for music and movies right? :)

Yeah, the Crystiliser is good for .mp3 playback, really does bring music back to life. You notice the difference when playing back music, and turning it on/off. You can hear what it's doing. :) Same for movies as well.

The MediaSource program is quite good as well, I use it now for playing and organising all my music. Once you get used to it it's very intuitive. Plus it has options for DTS and removing pops/clicks and hissing on digital music.

It takes awhile to get everything setup the way you like it, but after that you don't need to touch the settings again. Just simply flip between entertainment mode or game mode. :)

Thanks Firegod, I will certainly try out the Crystalliser feature when I get my card :)

Btw I've been seeing some ppl mentioning a feature called OpenAL and saying it is really good. What is this exactly? I am currently play Fable: Lost Chapters and one of the options is in fact OpenAL. Is it better than EAX? Which would you guys choose?

Not so much better, as a different way of doing it. Its also currently the only way of getting surround sound in Vista, as theres no more directsound hardware accelleration.
