As Creative has just announced the news cards, should I wait to buy one of these or would it matter if I brought one of their current Recon3d cards?

Really would I be missing a lot If I brought a card now?

Neither, the whole core3D is marketing BS and a high price tacked on to a mediocre soundcard. These new cards look like the same thing with sexed up covers to make them look good.

Check out the xonar range if you really need a soundcard.

i will agree though seems creative just put a nice package out there and well its not quite replaced the Asus, good on Asus for getting in there and taking over the sound market.

I am a massive die-hard Creative fan.

So much so, that all my PCs ( I have 13, 7 of which are ina lan room and the rest are in various rooms in my house ) all have Creative cards with Live drives ( Front bay thingies )

At least they used to.

Im sorry creative, but Asus really are floating my boat.

And your Recon3D Cards are just about floating a turd in a toilet bowl to be honest.

Wait for reviews. Wait until we get to see what is under the covers. Look how many people salivated when Creative announced the Recon3D cards. Thankfully the standard Recon3D card didn't have a cover, so we could see it was an almost bare PCB. Anyone with any knowledge of sound card hardware, knew that didn't bode well. For those salivating gamers, well, they like a bit of bling. Look how many bought a Titanium Pro Fatal1ty Champ whatever edition, because it looked the business. Looks better so it must be right? The card was no better than an X-Fi costing half as much. Until we can see what is under the covers of these new cards, it's hard to say if Creative have indeed used studio grade components, or whether they are trying to pull a fast one, again.

HEY!

The card was no better than an X-Fi costing half as much.

This is so awfully painfully true.

My top end XFI has only really one benefit over my lowest end one, and that is, that it has its own onboard RAM. This Was fun for messing about with SoundFonts, and of that I have loads, but ultimately, I no longer care abotu them because I take music seriously and the Creative cards are simply not worth the effort anymore.

In truth, if you go for an XFI, get the cheapest... Or you are just wasting money.

It can be seen already that its using that core3D crap, which is worse than the x-fi from umpteen years ago, that tells me enough about the quality of these cards.

Me too. Finally hoping for something to replace my launch bought X-Fi Elite Pro, which has problems in my latest build so ended up taking it out. :(

has anybody installed the z on a windows 8 machine, I've just upgraded to windows 8 pro and i have sound ok but the pro studio suite only displays the cinematic option.

i was looking at one of these for christmas
one with the external plug in thing, looked nice

i wonder how the headphone amp compares to asus tho? it would mainly be used with headphones

any advice welcome ><

Running one on Windows 8 did have a dx2 but blooding thing kept cutting in and out now and again so swapped out for the z

Prefer the z to be honest on my z550's

Installed mine a while ago and I'm extremely pleased with it. I'd switched between my old Audigy 2 and the onboard Realtek 889 and wasn't overly impressed with either.
The difference with the SB Z is massive, I thought my Grado phones sounded good before, with the Z they sound like a whole different set! So much more range and power than the onboard or audigy 2. Honestly couldn't be happier with it :D.

It will be interesting to see how the ZXR competes with stand-alone dacs if it is released at a price point of £200
