If you intend to keep any kind of balance month-to-month and want the same card for a long time, get a long-term low rate card. If not, get any card you like, preferably a cashback card (so you get free money [like 1%] for using it).

Lots of useful information here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cards/

Hard to say what the "best" one is but i've been using my Tesco card for most purchases for years. The points soon rack up are and enough to pay for a meal out every few months.

Pay it off every month as well so i've never paid a penny in interest :)

Just seen thread and funnily enough got screwed over by barclaycard yesterday.

Had a DD set up with them to pay off in full every month, but for some unknown reason it was not processed last month. I have no idea what happened and was under the impression it had all been paid off until i got a text saying I had 6 days to pay back or get charged again. Turns out the transaction i made in August was still on the card getting charged silly amounts of interest. Checked online using their website and it says the DD is still setup and working fine so i've got no idea wtf is going on.

In the end I gave up trying to get in touch using their quoted phoned numbers as they are useless and emailed them instead. Will probably try contacting the financial ombudsman next week if they have not got back to me and see if i can claim it back. Even though it is not very much money it is completely unethical of them to carry out their business this way. As anyone experienced something like this before?

I've never had a CC but would like to get one, mainly for better protection when buying on line and also to build up some kind of credit history for the day when I need a mortgage.

So I Have a few questions:

If you have a card and don't use it is there something to pay at the end of the month?
If so can the amount be paid automatically by a direct debit?
If you buy something on the card does this (or can this) get paid automatically by DD as well?
