Does anyone know if i can get a free credit report or if im always going to have to pay for one?

Im after a contract phone but i have been refered to equifax...

I dont know what to do, i havent ever been overdrawn and havnt had the chance to be due to me only just turning 18 2 weeks ago.

I have lived in 4 houses in 3 years, due to a **** of a dad, moved me to devon, 2 houses in devon, moved in with my mum 2 months ago. Lived in a house in bradford prior to the devon move for 6-8 years, my bank have been notified about every move, i have valid passport and driving licence so what can possibly be going wrong here?

I actually dont understand anything about credit and the checks they go through.

Cheers,

James.

You're young and have no personal credit history, in addition to which a member of your immediate family (and you) have moved around a lot in the last few years. Ergo you have an extremely poor credit score.

So because i moved house i have a poor score?

How can i get that better?

Ive had a subscription on my card before which was paid weekly for around 6 months...

i dont understand this crap, all i want to do is get a new phone, on a contract get a better deal then i have now..

Are you on the electoral register at your current address? This is used as verification of your address and is essential to increase your credit score, especially in your circumstances.

How do you cancel, is it easy?

I need to get one, I think my credit score has been messed up, as I have somethings at my new address and some at my old address(parents).

You have to ring mon-fri 9am to 6pm and sat is 9-3 iirc. They had 3 payments out of me as I forgot to cancel, so they cancel straight away, freind had to go on hold etc for few mins when he hadn't payed. They do it eventually.

I cant use them as they want a credit card, i only have solo..

Go get one? :p

That will help your credit too, buy things and pay it off, get it with your bank.

Edit. Also you shouldn't really have a Solo they should have picked you up as 18 and given you a Meastro. Unless the situation is so bad that you have a Solo because they think your some Polish immmigrant that red flags. :p

If your Bank won't give you a CC, Crapital One will :D

Just remember their interest rates are abysmal, and you should only get one, and use it for small purchases that you can afford to pay off in full each month, in order to increase your credit rating.

This will work but you've just gotta be careful with CC's, especially ones designed for people with bad credit that have terribles rates (Crapital One).

:S

credit card

you having a laugh..

ive been told by so many people not to get one, ever, as they are a joke.

plus, how do they actually work, you buy something, they add interest on they each month, and every month they keep adding interest on what you owe?

am i right?

Credit cards are fine if you are disciplined with them. It works by you have a credit limit, say £1000. You are allowed to borrow this £1000 by spending on your credit card. If you pay it back at the end of the month, no interest is charged. However, if you do not pay off the balance in full at the end of each month, interest is added at whatever the APR is.

You can actually make money off them if you are sensible but if you can't trust yourself with credit then you're better off not getting one.

My mate has shocking credit history, as his dad went bankrupt and had massive debts on various platinum cards, also they moved about 5 times in 4 years, he managed to get a C1 card, although his limit was less than 100 pounds.

It helped him to gain the credit history he needed to get his contract phone.

And theres nothing wrong with them, just use them to buy a train ticket once a month, or fill your car up, and make sure you pay it off in full each month, in a few months your rating will have increased and you should be able to get your phone.

Incidentally most phone networks use different credit checking agencies to do their reports, so if you get turned down for, say Orange, you may still be accepted on an 02 contract, as they use a different agency.

Try getting little items on finance from shops to start you off with.

I had major difficulty getting credit due to moving twice in as many years. Just last Christmas I went into a high street store and bought an Xbox 360 on finance.

Shortly after that I was able to get a contract phone and in the last month, I've been able to get a credit card (despite putting down that I was unemployed).

Credit cards are great, when managed correctly they are basically a short-term interest free loan for purchases. If you time your purchases and payments right you can get around 6-7 weeks interest free. Example:

-Bill arrives on e.g. the 1st of the month
-Go out and buy something on the 2nd of the month.
-New bill including the above transaction arrives on the 1st of the next month
-Pay off the bill in full before the end of that month = no interest incurred

Bear in mind that many cards will offer you an extended interest free period when you first sign up, so you can leave them maxed out for say 6/9/12 months just paying off the minimum (typically around 2%) each month and then pay them off in full just before the special offer expires.

They only cause problems if you are stupid enough not to pay them off in full each month (i.e. spending more than you can afford).

Anyone that tells you credit cards are evil and stupid cannot manage their finances.

That would be my dad, hes an idiot anyway, i dont talk to him, he lives off the government, doing nothing all day everyday.

He put me off a CC.. saying they are stupid and just cause dept, so i never tried to get one or find out what they are.. now i know what they are, they are simple, if you keep up with payments you are fine, and they are worth having as lots of things, including online payments can only be gained by using credit cards.

Aslong as i keep to the repayments, and i will as i wouldnt wana get into debt, then ill be safe. Id use it as a safe keep type thing, or maybe to just pay weekly driving lessons...

How does that sound?

perfect, many people use it to pay for fuel, then pay it off when they get paid, builds up your credit rating and also means you can budget fuel for when you get paid.
