Well, as some of you may remember i had been looking at a Focus 1.6 Zetec...some chap mentioned Skoda at work, and i decided to look at the website.

Im in love with the vRS!

More than 50mpg from a TD that will get you from 0-60 in 9 seconds, and its around £12,000 brand new?

Cor blimey guvnor, i think i might be off to my (not so) local dealer tommorow to have a chat and tell the Ford bloke where to shove it!

Does anyone have any more information on these, does anyone have one, does anyone know what sort of reasonable price you can haggle down to? The Skoda website doesnt seem to have much information really...

Excited :D

I test drove one some weeks back. This is what I thought:

Engine wise, it's nice and torquey and pulls well enough in each gear. It's not that noisey (seeing as it's a diesel). It's also remappable upto about 170PS (which is nice :D). Handling wise, it's ok. Grips ok, but a little too much rolling about for my liking, and it's a little twitchy at high speed. Interior is really nice and funky, the seats are comfy - although I found them a little odd to sit in, springy rather than supportive is the word to use I think. Equipment levels are ok, although I'm pretty sure the one I drove wasn't climate control and only had front electric windows.

Overall, I liked it - it just wasn't what I was looking for. Definately worth a look if you fancy the looks of it, I think it looks great.

The dealer offered me a new (06) one for ~11,800 OTR. The residuals at the moment are very good, 3 year olds are worth about 7-8k.

I've had one since October ... and im selling it at the weekend.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice car, very cheap to run, easy to drive on a commute, doesn't miss a beat and has fantastic mid-range torque. But it doesn't entertain like a proper hot-hatch does. I've missed the 7k+ red line of a petrol motor!

As Scottland said the chasis provides good grip, but it's all a bit VAG roley poley for proper thrills.

Fantastic car. I have test driven one twice now.

I was tempted by one, but decided againsit it. Bought a 51 plate 330d instead. No matter how good the Fabia is, it aint no BMW!

:D

If considering a Fabia RS- perhaps think about a Fiat Punto Hgt Multijet with the 1.9 diesel unit- I considered an Rs but couldn't face 5 doors so went for the Fiat- my dad has a Skoda so it is n't at anti Skoda thing!

A Fiat?

Edit: Oh, from the above post. No, im not thinking about a Fiat. Im trying to decide between the C2VTS and the Fabia vRS. The second being my preffered choice but the first being the easier (location of dealer) and cheaper option.

If it's a choice between the C2 and the Fab vRS, then it's got to be the Skoda.

If things continue as they are, you'll lose a lot less on the Fabia than you will a C2, so in the long run price will even out.

Nothing wrong with mine so far! (searches frantically for chunk of wood)

Fair do's mate, the missus had two puntos and they were ok ish but were new cars anyway. I know people who do high miles in the Bravo Diesels and have big tales of woe..

Worst. Looking. Car. Ever.

All imo of course

The Fabia, right? I would agree, but after looking at several hundred photos of the vRS im in love, especially that interior :D .

Must be a bit of a Marmite thing, at least its put me off the C2 - Fox would bash my head in if i went for that :D

The PD engines get better with age. My Ibiza with it's PD130 lump seemed to really improve round the 50,000 mile mark.

I've got a Furby vRS which was bought new 9 months ago. It's great. I really really like it. I usually get secondhand cars, but 18 month old cars with 20k milers were going for £11k at the time. Residuals are good - the earliest are coming up for 3 years old are are still going for around 8k.

It's a damn good all rounder for the money. It's cheap to insure (group 9) and I'm averaging 45mpg in general use, with 55mpg driven sensibly on the motorway. It's small and chuckable around town and it'll cruise quietly all day at 75mph doing 2200rpm in sixth.

The book performance figures are on the conservative even by VAG standards - Autocar figured their long termer at 8.2s 0-60 with a one-off best of 7.2s. In the real world the sheer grunt of the PD engine is amazing.

Handling isn't as good as hardcore hot hatches like the Clio Cup or CTR but is much better than say a Golf GT TDI. The steering has the usual VW vagueness to it and the heavy lump of pig iron up front doesn't help. It grips well and the ride is comfortable. Standard kit is all you need - electric everything, CD player, climatic and a trip computer. Popular options are Xenons, bumwarmers and a CD Changer.

Skoda dealers don't tend to haggle that much - I managed a good trade in against a VW and free metallic paint. There was an internet operation called Autofinders who were advertising at £10995 a while back tho.

To sum it up in a sentence - Golf GT TDI with a cheaper dashboard and a 5k saving...
