Crossfire 6870 vs ....

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I have just ordered a second 6870. It seems to me that this will offer the biggest improvement over what i already have. If I get a 7850 I will be relying on overclocking potential that will only "probably" be there, besides I will probably just want to crossfire 7850s in a couple of months if i get one now.

If the crossfire 6870 doesn't work out for me I can always sell and get a 7870.

Thanks again, and for reference with one 6870 (core 990, mem stock): Heaven 3.0 1080p 4x AA, Tesselation normal = score of 995.

I'll post a CF result in a couple of days.

:facedesk:

I don't know if you missed all the comments above, but you won't be able to play BF3 on Ultra, so was that actually a requirement or not because you seem to be ignoring your own request?

Indeed you're going to have superb performance at High, but Ultra is going to be a no go with 1GB memory.

D'oh. I think you're going to hit VRAM probs in BF3 on ultra. And that's coming from a person who absolutely hates the "VRAM isn't enough" generic argument that is banded around :)

Yeah I know I might not be able to play BF3 with everything on Ultra. But it seems like this is the only game which i really limited by VRAM at the mo, and I don't even really like BF3 that much.

TBH doubling my FPS in Crysis maxed out would be a better improvment to me than playing BF3 on Ultra textures rather than high.

Unfortunately it's true with BF3, on ultra it'll easily fill 2GB memory on most maps, and even the low mem usage maps will hit ~1.6GB memory usage on Ultra.

You might be able to get away with a mixed High/Ultra config, but certainly no MSAA, and I'd stay away from Ultra textures.

I wouldn't say it's the only game but you're right to a point that 1GB is enough for most but the key is only just.

I just feel that personally throwing money at a 1GB crossfire set up now isn't beneficial. Especially when selling the first card can make upgrading to something like a 7850 really cheap.

Your call though - you took the advice given and made your call. Fair enough :).

If form is true you'll probably get decent FPS with stuttering as stuff loads from your pagefile. That's what I'm anticipating anyway.

Well I'm about to find out tomorrow.

If you are right I am going to feel like an idiot and there will be a pair of nearly new 6870s on the market....

Sod that - if you do have problems just DSR the new one and sell then old one :)

Not that, that is what DSR is really for and you shouldn't make a habit of it mind ha ha :p

yeah, DSR is that you have to NOTIFY them of your intention to cancel the contract within 7 working days beginning the day after you receive the item

you are allowed to take reasonable steps to inspect the item - such as opening the packaging - as long as no damage is caused to the item they have to accept the return, you don't actually even need to return the packaging, only the box contents

unless it's custom made, food/drink or video/audio recordings or software (obviously food goods could go off before the return is made and software/music can be copied too easily if the package has been opened)

Packaging

The purpose of the DSRs is to allow customers to examine goods they have ordered as they would in a shop. If that requires opening the packaging and trying out the goods, then they have not breached their duty to take reasonable care of the goods.
In these circumstances, you cannot insist that customers return the goods as new or in their original packaging. You may ask customers to take care when they open the package or return goods with the original packaging, but you cannot insist on this.
The DSRs do not provide for goods to be returned in a fit state for resale.
You should think carefully about your packaging and how easy it is to open and put back together so that the integrity of the product can be maintained to enable resale.

arguably actually installing and using the card is againt the DSR's as you wouldn't be able to do that in a shop either - but if you don't tell them you have actually used it they have no proof other than the fact you've opened the box - but opening the box is not against the DSR's

also, they have to refund the money within 30 days that you notify them but there's no time limit on when you return the goods, only that you do have to return them at some point

Thanks for the DSR info. As i said though i have cancelled the order now anyway.

I hate you guys, I want a 7870 now...
