Crossfire 7850HD Upgrade?

Hi Folks,

I've had my 2 7850HD's in crossfire since they were bought in 2012/2013, and they're starting to show their age! (plus one of the fans is missing a couple of fins and sounds terrible...)

I'm looking to go back to single card, and aren't fussy as to whether its ATI or NVIDIA, but I'd like to keep the price to around £250. Unless you can convince me that spending another £30-£50 is worth it.

From older threads, I see that this got a mention in August 2018, but wondered if there was anything else that you good folk would recommend?

I mainly play FPS, but do enjoy a good bit of D3 too. I'd like to game at 1440p with decent settings, but appreciate that the budget might not stretch that far!

Current specs:

- 1440p monitor
- MSI Z87M-GAMING Motherboard
- i5 4670k
- 16gb RAM (Crucial 16GB kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800))
- Couple of SSDs

Ta,
Tom

The 580/590 isnt a bad shout, they appear to be aging slightly better than the equivalent nvidia 1060. However at 1440p Id say the Vega 56 would be the sweet spot which comes in at £320. They are around 20% faster than the 580/590 and competes with the 1070/ti which are currently sitting around the £400 mark.

Thanks Chrisc, in your honest opinion, is it worth the extra £££? I'm an occasional gamer, but would happily spend the extra if it was going to future-proof me for another 6 or so years.

People on here have far more knowledge than what i do, but i am confident somebody will back me up and confirm if you're gaming at 1440p the Vega 56 is worth the extra.

on another note, if you can hang on a bit longer, the newer AMD cards are about to be announced. Rumors are flying around everywhere that the mid tier cards may be pulling in Vega 64 performance for less £££. How true this is I really wouldnt like to say.

Also Nvidia will be announcing their mid tier cards soon also. However, if you're desperate for an upgrade you really wont be disappointed by the 56, the choice is entirely up to you :D

I'm not overly in a hurry tbh. I don't tend to game in the summer which is why I've only just noticed the performance over the last couple of months.

Just thought I'd pick the brains of the forum whilst the Jan sales were on.

Definitely Vega56 is the cheapest option for 1440p if you want to run at decent settings and not be enquiring this time next year/two year's time for another upgrade.

AMD's 7 nm GPUs are probably a ways off still. The RTX 2060/GTX 1160 sound like they'll be coming sooner, and will probably be worth looking at as an alternative (depending on price of course).

Ta,

I'd go for the RX590 Red Devi, it's a tenner under budget & it comes with 3 unreleased games, any of which can be sold on if you don't want it. The 580 is a Red Dragon which is a lower level model compared to the Red Devil model that's the 590, Being a Red Dragon won't realistically make a difference but it is a feather in the bonnet for the Red Devil, Technically the same chip is being used in the 580 & the 590 but the 590 is faster, it offers you get the maximum performance available from the Polaris architecture. Plus the 590 comes with 3 games while the 580 only comes with 2 games. In my opinion those little differences add up to enough to make the 590 worth the extra over the 580, especially if you want it to wait as long as possible until the next upgrade. The 580 is a good deal though.

EDIT: Damn, I'm too slow as usual. The Vega 56 is a good option too. :)
