Crossfire GPU's only getting 40-60% Usage on certain games?

To put simply, with the few exception such graphic demanding games like Crysis 3, crossfire 7970 should be able to do minimum frame rate above 100~120fps without issue, however for CPU, it is not uncommon for an overclock i5 to have a minimum frame rate around only 70-80fps. The actual frame rate you get in games will always be limited the lower of the two (CPU frame rate vs graphic card frame rate), so despite crossfire 7970s themselves may have no problem holding 100fps+, if the CPU minimum frame rate is only 70fps, the minimum frame rate you get in game would still be 70fps.

Would that explain why my GPU usage does not go as high as I would like as the CPU is holding back, or could the GPU's still be at 90-100% and still be held back by the CPU?

I think 90-100% is nothing really worth worrying about. There's not much you can really do anyway (other than overclocking your CPU higher, or pay lots of money upgrading to the Intel Hex core platform). CPU bottleneck aside, partly I am still suspecting the PCI-E 2.0 x4 slot is also partly responsible for less than optimal performance.

Yes I agree, I think the Motherboard is letting me down. If I were to get a new motherboard would I have to buy another serial key for Windows and what Motherboard would be best suited?
Would it be worth all that hassle to go 8x/8x or 16x/16x, would you performance boost be worth it?

If you do add a new mobo maybe then would maybe be a good time for a fresh windows install though.

Ahh seems simple enough, when deleting the partitions from my SSD (where Windows is installed), do I have to delete partitions from my HDD aswell as they contain all my games and whatnot or is that the whole point in a fresh install?

No idea about that sorry.
 
Partitions should be readable by a new OS. Seems pretty drastic to delete all your games unless you think there's a problem in the game files themselves.

You don't need to re-partition your boot drive unless you want to re-arrange the way space is allocated.

Just thought id add to this thread and say i bought a 3770k @ 4.6 to replace my 2500k @4.6 and now gone from 50-60% usage to a very regular 99% usage on both cards!
Very happy
