Crossfire Query

Building a system with an X1950 XTX crossfire solution.

I want to run two monitors on it :-
Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP as the main gaming monitor (1920 x 1200)
Hyundai L90D+ as the desktop monitor (1280 x 1024)

My query is does the Crossfire solution have to use the external connector cable ? And if so does that then mean that you cannot run a second monitor ?
Is there now an internal solution ?

It has been hinted to me that a crossfire system is limited to 1600 x 1200 resolution ? Couldnt really find any reasoning for this but wanted to confirm that its not.

Thanks.

For thre x1950 Crossfire, you do have to use the dongle (cable).

Only the 1900GT, 1800GTO and X1600/X1300 run in software modes without the cable.

As for a dual monitor setup, you can run dual monitors but not when Crossfire is activated for your gaming.

Well flipping the problem on its head then would an SLi set up allow the 2nd monitor to run my desktop whilst gaming ?

Thats just on the old x8 series cards, they were limited to 16x12 at 60hz, so crossfiring those was rubbish, the x1k are not limited at all. :)

You will not be able to run two monitors on any rig using only SLI or Crossfire cards. Even if you add a third basic ati card to a Crossfire enabled system , you will have trouble getting it to work - I gave up after fighting with it - it might be possible with the 3nd card being nvidia but i think thats asking for even more trouble myself. Some people on here have reported success at having a SLI setup with a 3rd nv card for the 2nd TFT, but I cant comment whether this will work with new drivers or if its easy or hard to get working

To enable crossfire you do need the external cable yes, but that really has nothing to do with the reasoning for not having the 2nd monitor working. - According to ATI too many mobo resources are used up enabling Crossfire for another vga card to work simultaneously -

With the new mobo chipset about to be released there will be a crossfire internal connection instead - not sure yet but it seems likely that new crossfire cards will also be required -- well to be more exact the chipset has been released however I dont believe any mobo's usuing it have been released to the public

As stated above you are thinking of the limitation on X1800's and lower, the neewer generation of X1900 do not have this limitation and I have happily gamed at full res on my 2407 so dont worry about that
