My mobo has 2 pci e sockets one is x16 the other x4.
My card is a 5870 and id like to add another card for xfire but would the x4 socket hurt the performance so bad as to not make the extra card worthwhile.

My pci e x16 is 2.0 socket so id guess the x4 socket is also.
I have got a couple of gtx 8800s spare and a 4870x2 but im sure i cant crossfire with the 4870 as they are different gen.
My os is win7 64 and im sure i read somewhere that nvidia had disabled the use of one of its cards to be used for physics with win7.
Im not sure how xfire works that's why im unsure if the use of a x4 socket would cripple the performance or not as i thought one card draws a line each like sli on my old voodoo 2s and if that's the case x4 wouldn't be a bottleneck like i was using a single card in a x4 socket would be.
Edit just had a look at the mobo manual and the x4 socket is pci e 1.0/1.1 standard and only the x16 socket is 2.0 standard.
If a second 5870 would run at 90% then i would think this is still worth trying.

i dont think running at 4X you would get 90% performance,if it was 8X the difference is not much. Not worth adding a second card for 4X pcie imo. Also good luck in finding a second 5870.:)
