Hi,

I am currently putting together a new matx rig to be used for light video/music editing etc.

As part of the spec I am buying a DFI LanParty JR 790GX motherboard which has crossfire avaliable...

I am looking to power three monitors from this, and wanted to know the cheapest and best solution for the graphics. For instance, would it be an option to buy two low end ati cards from 4/5 series (like the 4350 etc) and crossfire them. Or could I just put two in a non crossfire mode and would they run three monitors?

Thanks in advanced.

It would be better to buy something like a cheap 5750 which can run 3 monitors and there is no need for crossfire.

but doesn't that need a displayport adaptor thingy??, two 5450s would cost me £80, then I could just have them in each PCI-E 16x slot with no crossfire?? and run three monitors from this, would it work like that?

All of the Radeon HD5000 series cards support Eyefinity which means they can run 3 monitors from one card. You will need to buy an adaptor though and which one depends on what card you buy however I've been reading a lot of people who have 2 monitors running on the DVI's or 1 DVI and 1 HDMI can run a third monitor out of the Display port (you must use the display port if you want Eyefinity to work) via a Display port to a passive VGA adaptor. The benefit of this is that they don't have to buy an expensive Active Display Port to DVI adaptor.

Eyefinity is only supported on 5000 series cards.

i am not gaming at all, just for video editing and music editing and general usage etc, a little hd stuff, would this perform ok?

tbh i am really just trying to find the cheapest and best solution for three monitors

A single ATI radeon HD 5770 has the capability to run Eyefinity across three monitors, as does the less specified 5750 however the 5770 is probably the minimum spec.

quote...............HD 5700 Series graphics processors. Loaded with advanced technology, these GPUs have the power and premium features you need for fully immersive gameplay. Expand your visual real estate across up to three displays and get lost in the action with revolutionary ATI Eyefinity Technology.......................

but would two 5450s provide me with a solution for three monitors using the DFI LanParty JR 790GX, the other reason I would prefer these is price and the fact they have passive coolers (trying to keep noise down) would they handle hd? is it ok having two gpus in one system without cf enabled?
