Would there be any point in companies selling crossfire/SLI matched pairs of graphics cards? These days pretty much the only way to buy RAM is as a matched pair. I am aware that there are a lot of benefits of having pairs of RAM as opposed to two non-identical sticks and crossfire/SLI is much more versatile when it comes to non-identical brands/cards.

Would there be an advantage of having a *matched pair* of graphics cards, or would it be merely another gimmick to overcharge for?

it would be gimmick due to you can crossfire/sli any card of the same model even if they have different clock speed due to it will clock it down to the lowest card.

The only advantages I can see are reduced packaging and synced warranty with both cards - ie both covered for the same length of time.

I think ATi might have done this in the past with their X1800 or X1900? It was just a sales gimmick really, but was very nicely done.

With that generation of card you needed to have a special crossfire master card and a slave both attached via an external dongle. Now all ATi cards have crossfire chips and an internal crossfire bridge like SLI had all along.
