hi, got a question and prob got simple answer to it :D
now sli is 2 nvidia's and crossfire is 2 ati's and you have to have sli, cross enabled mobo to run either.
can a sli board run a ati 4870 *2 at full potential .or does it need to be on crossfire board, and same with 9800*2/sli ?
cheers

It depends on the chipset,
For SLi on a skt775 board (core2 and previous) then you are required to use an nvidia motherboard, same if you are using an amd processor and want to use SLi.
For crossfire, you are better off using an X48 intel chipset motherboard, or the amd equivilent.

If your using an i7 cpu, then most of the X58 boards support both natively.

now correct me if im wrong i dont think you can ati cards must be crossfire boards and cant be used on a nvida sli board vice versa.

^^Yes, that is correct. Just like my mobo (which only supports crossfire) can still run a dual gpu nvidia card like the gtx295.

An SLI board like the nForce 680i can run a single 4870X2 fine and make full use of both GPUs on that card without any issues... you obviously can't add another 4870X2 however to run "quadfire".
