Crossfire / VRAM question

Just starting to think about a small upgrade but will not be buying for a few months yet and just had a thought I am hoping I can get cleared up.

I am using a xfx 5850 and the plan was always just to crossfire with another when I have some spare cash. Should I be looking to match ie another 5850, would sticking a more powerfull card in cause inbalance issues?

Also VRAM, only game I have had issues with where I have thought I wish had more VRAM to play with is GTAIV. If i had two card with 1G vram each does crossfire make good use utilising both. Or would I be better off paying the extra for a card with more vram?

Thanks in advance.

You have to match it with another 5850 to enable xfire, any brand/clocks will do.

2x1GB cards in xfire still only have a maximum of 1GB usable memory, both cards utilize 1GB each.

If it's only for GTAIV then I wouldn't bother. Most of the time 5850 in xfire will beat even a 580:

At £115 that would be your best bang for buck.

The amount of vram available for each video will be decided by which card has the least so if you have a 2 cards in xfire one with 2Gb's and one with 1Gb's that would be the same as having two cards with 1Gb's each.
