How is it possible that you can use cards of different specs and different clocks together, where you can't with SLI?

I'm wanting to get another 38xx card for crossfire and am thinking about getting a 3870XT to add to my 3850....
 
The faster card will wait on the slower card, so if card X is 20% faster than card Y then card X will spend 80% of its time working and 20% waiting to allow card Y to catch up.

In sli same model cards would clock to the lowest speed. I'm not sure why sli doesn't support cards of different target lines.
 
3780 and 3850 crossfired is meant to be faster than 2x 3850's, saw a review somewhere that showed this with some catalyst 8.3 betas, cant remember where tho. :rolleyes:
