Hi All..

i currently have a 28" 100mhz sony tv and was looking to upgrade too a lcd/plasma.i currently have free sat through a set top box..

Question..or 4!!

will i see a remarkable difference in picture quality?
was thinking of 32"-will this be quite a big jump in size from a 28" crt?
can i only get a hdmi signal by subscribing too sky hd?(i believe bbc hd is free)?
choice between panny 32lxd60 or tosh 20wlt66 (any other suggestions welcome)?

Any help would be welcome as this is all new to me now!!

You can start by posting your max budget first of all.

And yes for a HD signal you will need a SKY HD subscription, i dont think freeview is HD (hence you can't get BBC HD on it even though its 'free')

Because CRTs are closer to you (due to their depth) it is recomended to get a bigger Flat panel display.

So 32" - 36" will probably suit you.

Picture quality is really down to the display and the sorce. If you are playing DVD's, watching Sky HD or playing a 360 then you will notice an improvement in picture quality. Standard Def picturs on a 720p (+) resolution tend to look worse than on a non HD CRT. Also depending on the Screen (LCD in particular) there may be a trail in fast movement (watch a football match to see if this happens to the football)

720p and 1080p video looks by far better than standard Def video.

HDMI is a cable its the Hi-def equivilent of Scart. IIRC you can get Sky boxes with or without it.

BBC HD is not nationaly broadcast yet, and is only supplied by Sky or Telewest (unless you are in the over the air test region).

Currently Sony are making the best Hi-def Screens the bravia W and X models are the ones to go for if they make them in your size range. However this quality comes at a price. a big price.

Many thanks for the info..my max budget is £800 which covers both models i've mentioned..i really don't want to subscribe too sky as i think they are the worse company i've dealt with-due to the unprofessional engineers they use and there very poor customer service.
