I was thinking about upgrading to a larger and higher res monitor and CRT crept into my thouughts.

I have a huge desk so room isnt a problem but am I thinking wrong.

I currently have a 17" hyundia TFT monitor 1280x1040 res

Any thoughts.

If i did are there any makes/models to look for?

Thanks

If you are a serious fps player or do image work where colour accuracy counts then a crt is the right choice. ANything else, get a tft.

What do you mainly use your PC for?
I agree with Greebo though. Only die hard gamers (semi-pro) and die hard photogrphers (semi-pro) need consider CRT these days.

Lack of widescreen for one is a big negative for me

Space is an issue for me, which is why i got me a CTX EX711+ 17" CRT.... 1600x1200@75hz... no AA needed here

I used to think CRT's were way better than TFT's especially in the resolution front, as I won't go any lower than 1600*1200 on a monitor (fortunately my laptop is 1680*1050 :) ) but now you can get some really nice TFT's that are not that expensive that do 1920*1200 :) Plus they take up less room and are light to carry about..

Well as I enjoy FPS I would enjoy a slightly larger screen. I also like my photography too but that isnt what its going to be used for.

Anyone know what res my setup can take?

I'd probably say not running high enough resolution. But I guess if you buy a CRT then you don't need AA, so you can probably run higher resolution. However you'll want to keep the resolution on the monitor low enough to have a high refresh. Yeah some monitors will do 1900x1200 but if that's at 65hz it'll flicker like mad

Plus of course a 21" CRT is really 19" viewable, and isn't widescreen. Buying a used CRT isn't such a great idea, you don't know the condition of the tubes. It's not like CRT front projectors where they replace them. Basically a new unit. We've got dozens of old CRT monitors ready for the skip (faulty)

I think people are clinging onto CRT, yeah it does things better, but if you get a good LCD overall it looks better. More sharper image, less tiring on the eyes. Those high resolution LCD's don't flicker either, so compare a high resolution CRT next to a high resolution LCD and the LCD is less tiring.

Gaming is now in widescreen, so setting that 21" CRT will be even smaller, I would think your 17" (widescreen?) will be similar size to a 21" CRT in widescreen mode.

If you still want a CRT, I'd try and find a brand new monitor. Which is unlikely. I had a 19" Iiyama, yeah it was good but caused me eye strain. Compared to my 20" LCD it's tiny (image size)

A good LCD is better than a CRT its like saying tapes sound better. Are you telling me that a modern good brand TFT cannot be adjusted to show the exact same colour palette as a top end CRT? Even more so, since most people have never even SEEN a "TOP END" CRT being as they were expensive and only used by graphics professionals what the hell are you comparing it to? Seems to me like someone somewhere once said "oh yeah CRT's give better color" and for some reason the stigma has perpetuated.

I have a customer who is a photographer, he really knows his imaging and was showing me all these greens once and telling me about how the temperature varied, i was like "WTF its green dude" but in his new spec he got a 22" Samsung TFT and he said it was categorically equivalent or better than his top end CRT from before. So judge what you will.

Well said Ultra_Extreme. I've had high-end CRT's from the old days and the high-end LCD displays are just as good at colour reproduction, infinitely sharper, don't have geometry distortions, or power-supply regulation problems, or the host of other problems CRTs have. Biggest issues with CRT's, is the stupid amount of desk space taken up  Also they kick out x-rays

My 17" is not widescreen.

So would you upgrade to a higher res bigger screen if you were me?

Thanks

19" widescreen samsung panel available from competitor for ~100 resolution of 1440x900 tidy upgrade within your constraints. Ideally youd pay 150 for a higher end Sammy or LG panel, if your really worried about IQ
