CRT

No they don't but some places still have a few. Very few CRTs being made new though, I think Viewsonic have one but it's blurry in very high res. You're really looking at buying something used. Try to get something with a Sony Trinitron tube (they're not just in Sony monitors, many Dells use them), or failing that a Diamondtron.

Thanks for the advice there, I will look into it
I have got a Iiyama 19 incher (Vision Master Pro 454 HM903DT) and its just brilliant on 1280 by 1024@100Hz, woulnt want to miss it for the world

Buying a used CRT monitor that's had a few thousand hours usage is a bit of questionable decision. I know for CRT front projectors you can replace everything (new tubes)

You can get used to a modern TFT.

Nowadays ghosting and blurring is non-existent if you have the right setup. You will adjust very quickly and save a lot of space. As well as being aesthically better on the eye.

Well if I really want to come close to the performance of my CRT I would have to get a TN panel. And even though they are quick they dont look better then a CRT imo and the viewing angle is quite bad.

I have a CRT and a 22" TN panel LCD (226BW), and I'm sorry, but there is no way in hell my CRT looks better than the LCD, not on any day of the week. The colours are so much brighter and more vivid, and however I set up the CRT it just came nowhere near. Now I'm not doubting that there are better CRTs than mine available, but from my own experience, LCDs just look nicer.

On the subject of ghosting, I've played plenty of fast paced games, like Q3 and crysis, on both screens to compare and the LCD still comes out on top every time. As for viewing angles, sure they aren't the best, but I sit in one place to do everything on my PC so it doesn't bother me much.

I must say though I was in a similar position to you before I got my LCD, I thought there was no way it could be as good for gaming as a CRT, but hey, I was proven wrong and I'm very glad I was, and I hope you will be too one day :)

Technically speaking TFT's can never be better then CRT in FPS games I was told because of refresh rate limitations but the real problem here is that I have seen quite a few proper TFT screens and they just dont look better in games. It very well may be the fact that it takes time to get used to a different screen I dont know

Both technologies have their advantages and weaknesses. The areas where CRTs are better would be speed, lag, black depth (and therefore contrast), refresh rates (and therefore tearing) and their resolution flexibility. I've got one of the best CRTs around (Dell P1130, Sony aperture grille Trinitron tube) and one of the best LCDs around (Dell 2007WFP, S-IPS panel) and for FPS games the CRT is miles ahead. It can match the brightness of the LCD too and the sharpness is very nearly as good as an LCD. Makes a massive difference having a quality CRT rather than some cheap rubbish.

However you won't be able to buy anything that good new.

Drop me an email, king - I might be able to help you in your search.

You'll have to activate your 'trust' to be able to see my email address though.

Yeah I agree, I need to get a screen new somewhere, dont want an old banger

Yeah but the advantage imo is they're selling so cheap second hand now.

People have jumped on the band-wagon and I'm sure there are a lot of crts out there that have still got a lot of life left in them.

I have a mitsubishi diamond pro and love it still and use it all the time. It is a classy monitor and still works totally fine and I've had it a number of years now.

If you look around I'm sure you'll get a good one in good nick.

Like a previous poster said .sony tubes also mitsubishi diamond pros are good - just make sure you get a good classy make with a good tube in it. Some very good crts have been made and are out there still.

My P1220 compaq 22" crt monster looks as colourful as my 2407wfp did and is considerably better for first person shooters.

I'd totally recommend picking up one of so many great 22" crt's in great condition for approx £40 second hand on a well known auction site.

CRT's rarely break and even if it did, just get another one for £40 !

A lot of the CRT bashers are just rubbish at games, and whine on about getting headaches when its their own faults for having a crap budget small CRT set @ 60hz/85hz etc.

most LCD's are very good for noob games like world of woofters though :p I'd say a 226bw is a competent lcd for fps games if you really have no space for a CRT but it simply isn't as good because of tearing / general smoothness etc.

EDIT - speaking from personal experience here having tried pretty much every top end lcd (both overdriven lcd's + posh dell ones etc)

Im on a high end 22" CRT, I have seen all sorts (bought for customers and owned) 1080p HDTV's and upto 24" Monitors and none are as nice looking for Movies or Games as my CRT (I dont ideally watch movies without TV-Out anyhow).

The LCD's esp 22" and above are great for Internet and Office etc, but games just dont look right to me and whats the point in buying a GPU that retailed at £525 as new (I got it for far less) and play games that on a LCD, I play at 1920x1440@85hz, no V-Sync and no tearing.

I hope for a change someday probably when SED gets over the legal hurdle.
