Query on Crucial ram...background is this :
Mate has an old Nforce 590i chipset which officially only supports ddr2 667mhz at a max of 2.1v. He had some Crucial 6400C4 which ran fine at default of 800mhz (board picked it up and cpu-z picked it up as 800mhz) but he could not overclock his fsb of his cpu past 275mhz without 3dmark freezing. We thought this was down to the fact he could not run any higher then 2.1v, and 2.2v is recommended for the Crucial. But we then tried some Corsair 800mhz ram which runs at a lower voltage then the Crucial (1.9v) and his board supported it too, but could not overclock either. Finally tried some generic 667mhz ram, and he was able to overclock his fsb to around 330mhz no problem. So it looks like he definitely needs 667mhz ram.

And question :
So am thinking of getting him 2gigs Crucial 5400C3. Will these overlock midly at 2.1v which is the max my mates mobo goes up to. Or do these need 2.2v. Would be talking about running the fsb at 330, so memory would be running at around 400 mhz mark. Could also get some cheaper Corsair 5400C4 stuff which will run at 1.9v just fine, but not so sure if there is any overclocking headroom in these.

Advice needed urgently. Thanks.

The Crucial should fine run at atleast 5-5-5-15 at 800mhz @2.1v. It runs fine at 4-4-4-12 at 800mhz @2.2v, so the slightly lower voltage should be fine with the looser 5-5-5-15 timings.

Or you could buy something like this for guaranteed 4-4-4-12 at 800mhz at no more than 2.1v.

Thanks for the link. The problem is he needs memory that is 667mhz not 800mhz as the chipset does not work properly when overclocking with 800mhz memory, and befor you say adjust the memory speed down, the board he has, has no way of changing the memory speed...only timings and voltage up to 2.1v. It's pants basically.

So I am after 5300 memory, that can do 4,4,4,12 at no more then 2.1v at default 333mhz, and can reasonably overclock with these timings to around 400mhz. The Crucial 5300 seems to tick all the boxes, and I was wondering if it could overclock to 400mhz at 4,4,4,12, 2.1v. Hopefully. I thought the 2.2v would only be needed if you were using the advertised tight timings of 3,3,3.

So can anyone answer my question above which is basically this :

Will the 2gig Crucial 5300C3 kit do close to 800mhz at 4,4,4,12, 2.1V ?

I mate

yes they do
I have these ballistix PC2 5300
mine are running fine at 333mhz (DDR667) at 12-3-3-3 with 1.9V
in a Asus P5B delx with everything at default

Cheers mate.

Actually only looking to run them at 367mhz. So hopefully will be able to do that at low voltage with decent timings. Will know on Tuesday when they arrive :)

On the particular 590i board my mate has he can run his quad at 3.6ghz (12x300). He has the ability to increase the multi (not lower it) in the bios, and the max stable fsb he can get to is around 300 (limitation of the chipset with quads I assume). We have already tested successfully with 1 stick of pos 5300 ram overclocked to 367mhz and cpu at 3.6, orthos and memtest stable.

All 6700 memory tested fails as the board picks it up at 800mhz from the SPD (no way to lower the speed in the bios or using ntune) and then immediately overclocks it when we raise the fsb to increase the cpu speed, resulting in bsods. Seems the 590i chipset he has doesn't really like overclocking memory past 400mhz. Hence the requirement for 333mhz ram.

yeap

tha SPD for Ballistyx PC2 5300 are that

so,I´m sure the board is going to pick-up one that SPD tables, 266mhz or 333mhz,with the respectives timmings, and they run with 1.9V
with 2.1V you could easely overclock a bit, I think something between 366 / 400fsb are not going to be a problem :)
