Crucial 64gb SSD Problems

Hi All,

I've recently purchased a Crucial 54 GB SSD. Unfortunately it seemed to suffer from random slow downs. It also failed to format correctly in Windows and during windows setup. It was replaced a few days ago but the new disk seems to be doing the same thing.

I've tried using my standard HDD (WD120) and it works fine. So I can only assume that the new HDD is faulty as well OR there is a fault with the Crucial range. I bought Crucial simply because I use their memory and have never had a problem.

Has anyone else bought a crucial ssd and are you experiencing these problems? Does anyone have any advice?

Kind Regards

Stuart

The slow downs are I suspect not random.

Firstly this is an early generation SSD, it maximum read and write speeds are 100MBps/35MBps. A fast traditional HD will beat those figures.

Secondly, SSDs are much slower once all the blocks have been written to at least once, as the blocks containing depricated data need clearing before they can be written too again, which at least halfs the maximum write speed.

Thridly early SSDs based on the Jmicron controller, had no cache, and suffered badly from this combined with the need to clear blocks before they can be written to. (I've seen results for 4K writes taking a whole second for instance).

Lastly Vista and Win7 understand SSDs and can get better performance and lifetime than XP, if you are using XP then this will add to the problems already described with this product.

Crucial have just announced a new generation of drives which should get them back up with the current competition. On the whole, newer SSDs are much much faster.

really poor read and write speeds on that crucial drive m8. So bad, they don't even advertise the speeds. I would try and get your money back and get another drive if I was you.
