Just noticed on the main site they had come down. £185.99 looks a lot more reasonable than £209.99 for the 128gb :) Barely a few quid more than the C300!
 
is it just me but there isnt much more performance than the c300.....and dont know if it matters but buffer is 128mb on thec300 but the c400 its 0mb...can anyone let me know if this is good or bad thanks.

Connect it on the Intel controller if you have one available. You shouldn't need to install any drivers usually.

2. Do i treat it like a normal hdd, ie, format and defrag etc?

No. When you install Windows just hit next at the install/format screen. Formatting is not really suitable for SSD's and never Defrag one. Run the Windows experience index assessment after you install your Chipset drivers and that will disable Disk Defrag and SuperFetch. You might also want to disable Hibernation and reduce the amount of space used for system restore.

Always select AHCI mode. The firmware update can be done from a Linux live boot disk anyway so even if you need to select IDE mode it won't matter as your not booting from the drive.

Heat is not an issue for SSD's. They sit at around 30°C usually which is fine.

Cheers for that. The Intel controller on my board is only Sata 2 which is why i asked about the Marvell controller which is Sata 3. I believe it was only from the 1155 (SB) boards that they gained Sata 3 from the Intel controller.
 
Personally... I would rather use a SATA II Intel controller than a SATA III Marvell controller. By all means try out both but from my understanding the Marvell controller wasn't too great with SSD's.
 
I was planning on buying a Vertex 3 SSD drive but I have now decided against it because of people saying it won't be worth it if i`m gonna be using it on my current Motherboard that has a SATA 6GB Marvell Controller.

Can anyone please let me know whether the Crucial RealSSD M4 256GB would be more suitable for use on a Marvell Controller and I should get better performance with this SSD than my Crucial RealSSD C300 256GB?

Or would I need a more modern Motherboard to benefit from this SSDs performance as well and so i`m best sticking with my Crucial RealSSD C300?

Does your board only have a Marvell controller? Don't get carried away with this SATA II and SATA III carrying on as any SSD (even on a SATA II port) is going to run like a dream. Im running an OCZ Vertex on IDE mode and it's still unbelievably quick :cool:

No, I have read that with the Vertex 3 SSD drive you need a more modern Motherboard with a negative SATA 6GB Controller like the ones on the
Intel Sandybridge Motherboard to benefit from this SSDs performance and so i`m wondering if it's the same case with these new Crucial RealSSD M4s?
 
I would suspect this is the case Sylver123 but if you have never had a SSD in your rig then I can assure you the difference between SATA II and SATA III will be close to impossible to see other than in benchmarks. Some of the controllers at the moment are poor at best and don't achieve anywhere near what they should in terms of speed.

*edit: buy it anyway. Even if you were getting SATA II speeds you'll be glad you did :)

philtorrens is correct Sylver123. It does seem that the SATA III Marvel controller is not providing maximum performance to the latest SSD drives, where as the Intel controller does. That being said its still going to perform extremely well whether you connect it to a Intel SATA II or a Marvel SATA III controller.

If benchmark figures don't mean the world to you, save a little money by looking at the last gen SSD drives or some of the OCZ specials OcUK have going at the moment.

If you already have a C300 i wouldn't bother upgrading just yet. You already have the benefits of the fast access times SSD's offer compared to mechanical drives.
 
There is a firmware update for my boards Marvell controller in the latest bios and from a review i was reading earlier it vastly improves performance. Going to give it a try anyway as i have nothing to lose.

Agreed, the biggest benefit of an SSD drive is the access times, silence and low power consumption, plus a C300 is already mighty fast, I'd not upgrade as the difference would be hardly noticable.
 
Yea theres no point upgrading from a C300, but I do hope that the 128 Gb C300 drops in price a lot :D

The difference between the C300 and M4 will be unnoticable.

As for the marvel vs intel controller on P55 / X58 boards, the Marvel controller is fine for Sata III drives, and they will work at their advertised read speeds (my C300 is happily running at 365 Mb/s read speed on Marvel). If you have Sata III marvel ports, putting a Sata III drive on them is completely fine and faster than putting it on a Sata II.

If however you have a Sata II drive, it will perform better on the Sata II ports. Also the Marvel controller doesnt support raid.

If you dont already have an SSD, the £99 64 Gb M4 is a great price for an OS drive.

I am just about to order my new system, do you think it will be better to hang on and wait for the new Crucial m4 ssd or just order the c300 128Gb with my new system, as this was the ssd I was going to orginally order ?

The price difference between the two is very little, as well.
