Just had an accident in our Audi. I had left what I thought to be a reasonable distance to the van in front, he slowed down, I touched the brakes, the road surface was ice and I went straight up his arse. I tried changing down and using engine braking which worked sufficently that the only damage I can see is a number plate smashed to smithereens. All the panel gaps appear consistant, but I'll not know for certain until tomorrow morning.

Reflecting on it now, it was clearly my fault and I was clearly too close. I completely misjudged the road conditions as the journey to that point had been slush, which while slippery did at least afford some grip. My neck is killing and I'm shaken up, but otherwise OK.

That's the first accident I've had in over 10 years as well

Sucks... at least no one was seriously hurt.

I hope you have protected no claims or it may be your wallet that comes off the worst come renew time

How would engine breaking help if your tyres are slipping?

The correct way to brake providing you have ABS is press the pedal as hard as you can.

Suprised your neck is killing yet you've only cracked the numberplate! I only had minor discomfort and wrecked a fair bit more than a numberplate.

Don't you think I know that? I did that and ABS did sweet FA. Then, seeing as I was rapidly approaching the back of the van, I decided to try something else.

bad luck on the accident front, but i'm also a little baffled how you cracked a number plate yet your neck is 'killing'.

If it's sore, it's sore. Why the disbelief? I didn't say it was broken, I said it was killing. It's better now, but it's still sore. Perhaps I should have chosen another word, but I posted as soon as I got home, immediately after the accident.

Also, he was sliding as well I believe. I wacked him, he bounced forward more and I almost stopped. He wasn't stationary, which I suspect helped.

i'm quite shocked that you were so close, that your reactions to get on the brakes, decided it wasn't enough, then did something else in supposedly a short distance. Takes quite a lot of thinking for people to do that, unless they have lots of experience.

if its ice underneath you can easily be sliding for a good 5 or 6 seconds. I had a similar event on thursday, luckily i was far back enough that i could stop, but its still a scary feeling.

I've been in a similar situation in my Scania in snow (although not this year) the ABS was pulsing away and doing sweet F.A. as it does in Snow and I surprised myself by thinking to switch off the ignition which killed the ABS, the wheels locked and nobody was more surprised than I that it stopped, about an inch from the car that had pulled across my path - "Did not see you" was his excuse, how you don't see a 14odd ft high 53ft long vehicle bearing down on you defeats me entirely.
I've been driving HGV's for nearly 14 years now so I guess thats experience.....
