Crusader Kings 2 - Any experts able to offer some pointers?

Hi folks,

I picked up Crusader Kings 2 a while ago, and struggled to get into it, primarily due to not having long play sessions available to learn the game.

It seems like the sort of thing that is right up my street, so I have just reinstalled the game and am looking for some pointers.

I am starting in 1066, and have selected the county of Dublin to play as, with the following self generated objectives:

1 - Establish The Kingdom of Ireland (short term)
2 - Gain prestige and piety by crusading (ongoing)
3 - Establish the Empire of Britannia (long term)

I know the game will be slow to start with, the things I need help with are:

Money. Is there something I should be doing to raise money quickly at the beginning of the game other than raising taxes?

Demesne. My Demesne size starts as a max of 3. I am prioritising Legalism to raise this. How to I grant titles to my sons whilst keeping the county I grant them under my control? Can I grant them a lesser title?

Marriage. I am really struggling to use the character sorter effectively. I use the filters at the top, but most of the women I find to marry usually come with a penalty of -200 to something (don't know what - opinion?)

Inviting people to court. Same problem as marriage.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer on the above or anything else you think I should know about. I am sure I will really enjoy this game once I learn the ins and outs, I don't think the tutorial or manual do a good enough job.

Cheers! :)

If I were you mate as this game is very involved indeed from what I have seen, a serious strategy game, I would try Paradox's forums first, and try and get help there, this game is pretty niche. I'd also try and find some online communities specializing in this type of game.

The people on here are very knowledgeable on all aspects of gaming, but I haven't seen a single mention of this game on this site anywhere(no doubt someone will now pop up with in depth help to prove me wrong) - but my guess would be you'd be better off asking elsewhere at more niche forums.

Money - Make sure your vassals have good opinion of you and the church like you more than the pope, they will start giving you a cut of their intake then

Demesne - Your stewardship + half of your wifes stewardship and a good steward will help. Only give out land to sons if you are over the limit, make sure you own the duke title for the land then make them the Earl.

Marriage - The -200 is a prestige hit for marrying a lowborn i think.

Money - Build the castle village/town upgrades for your owned castles. Aim to build cities in the spare holdings in each of your owned counties, rather than churches or more castles. Assign your steward to collect taxes in your home county.

I usually take the prestige hit rather than giving sons land except maybe third in line onwards, so that you can control who your heir marries, and can educate your grandson. The exception to this is if you grant them a barony( extra castle) in one of your owned counties, that way they stay in your court and you can still control them. But you would use up a free holding slot for a castle rather than a city.

I think they introduced that -200 prestige thing in the most recent patch, before that it was easy to marry any old commoner genius with 20+ stewardship and more. Its supposed to stop the AI doing it, though I never saw the problem myself.

Thanks for the info, I have learned more from this thread and the youtube vids than I have from the terrible tutorials and basic manual. The game is slowly growing on me, it is not particularly accessible though.

I just managed to form a Duchy and within a month my main man was the victim of assassination. I hadn't changed my succession laws so my paltry holdings were divided up amongst my sons. Bah! :)

Every day is a school day...

Edit: Just started a new game and all my family are contracting "Consumption" (tuberculosis)...
