Maybe it's an optimised version of the Cryengine 2? Perhaps they've just tweaked the current engine to achieve better scalability so that it'll run well on consoles and PCs as well as adding a few new features.
I really shouldn't raise to this as it comes up all the time.
But why should a software developer hold back what they can do whilst hardware catches up. All you had to do if you couldn't run it on max (which was pretty much everyone) was drop down the settings, it still looked as good, if not better than anything else in the market.
It's not Crysis' fault that it took a good 18 months for anything to really offer a speed increase over the nVidia 8800s. I'd rather game developers pushed the boundaries and released things that look incredible at max, rather than holding back and releasing something that doesn't look anywhere near as impressive. Why hold back graphics for those with lower end pcs - that's what the lower graphics settings are for.
