Just open up Steam and just saw this on the front page.

6 month subscription for £5.83 and royalty free and even more cheaper then unreal engine 4.

Too bad it's not that user friendly.

I actually enjoyed playing around with cryengine shame it's gone subscription model. The 1st iteration came free with the original crysis.

I'm no programmer / designer or anything like that so this has no use to me but just out of interest does this mean you can pay a subscription while you made a game and, once finished, you could cancel the subscription and sell the game for as long as you like royalty free?

Personally I think the UnrealEngine4 deal is way better. With Unreal you only have to pay for 1 month and you get that version plus all the tutorials and examples up to that point to play with. You can stop your sub and keep UE4 forever.

Plus if you happen to get to a level where you want to actually release a game UE4 won't charge you any royalties at all upto $10,000 and more then that is only 5%.

@ Drukk, no any time you make content on the engine you owe 20% whether you are a subscriber or not.

Just read this on the steam page -

Is it really royalty free?

Yes, the monthly subscription fee is all you have to pay, there’s no royalty share required when you commercialize your game projects.

But does not state if you have to keep the subscription going after you have finished.

Yeah i do agree UE4 is much better with all the documentation and tutorials available to newcomers.

Also paying for the 1month and canceling is 1 way of making it much cheaper then Cryengine but i think i would rather keep paying the montly bill to support the engine.

Yeh it is nice to support the company. However the deal has been setup for this specific reason, Epic want to be enhancing the engine so frequently that the sub is worth it.

Plus Epic have said that for those learning to use an engine like this for the first time the one month sub for the engine system is perfect. They fully endorse and in fact recommend that beginners just grab the engine and stop the sub until they feel they are at the level they can utilise all the new features put in each month. :)

not sure but if you could make a game that is 'steam worthy' then the subscription cost really wouldn't matter to you :)
