PC Games Crysis and UT3 Flop

Neither Crysis or UT3 sold more than 100,000 units in their November debut--sign of a PC gaming trend?

The simExchange reports that neither Crysis or UT3 managed to sell more than 100,000 units in their debut last month.

Crysis, which requires an unprecedented US$1500-$2500 in PC upgrades to play, sold 86,633 copies in the U.S., while Unreal Tournament 3 sold just 33,995 copies.

In January 2005, Vivendi said it sold 1.7 million copies of Half-Life 2 in just two months; much more than either Crysis or Unreal 3 for a similar period.

Though both games were released in the middle of the month, their numbers are clearly less than what EA and Midway had hoped for.

Are gamers abandoning the PC? Without jumping the gun, some believe the PC market is shrinking with exception to a few specific genres like the massively popular World of Warcraft MMO.

Indeed, both Xbox 360 and PS3 offer comparable, if not equal, graphics technology in most cases at a fraction of the cost. What was once the platform for hardcore shooters has seemingly been relegated to second place.

Thoughts? Ive heard plenty of complaints from UT fans that ut3 is just far too consolised for their tastes. Crysis on the other hand ive heard more mixed opinions of.

UT3 was only out 10 days in the month they are referring to so 100,000 for 10 days sale isnt bad plus there are a lot of sales methods that arent easy to get numbers for like direct downloads etc. This has also been posted on the main Epic forums where a lot of the other points relating to cost of upgrading required has been shot down in flames by players who managed to upgrade for UT/Crysis for $500.

This was also originally posted on a console site so a definite bias on the rubbish facts they are quoting. Think some of the players on the Epic forums are going to counter the claims and correct the lies being written down as facts.

Weren't a lot of UT2004 purchases made by people who never actually played the game itself but the mods that came out for it (I'm one of those people)? So we may expect the sale numbers not to die out in the near future as more mods start coming out?

A source for this news would be good. Until then, im taking this with a rather large pinch of salt.

the sales figures are legit (were released by the publishers of the games)

You can put that down to absurd PC component prices. I really can't see any developers wanting to stick to PCs now. Crytek were very stupid in my opinion to spend all that time and money on a game that they knew nobody could play, let alone buy.

UT3 and Crysis, two of this year's biggest PC games tanking will put a very large nail in PC gaming's coffin. It's sent a message out that there simply isnt any motivation to develop for the platform anymore, they should go to consoles. Farcry Xbox and Unreal Tournament on Dreamcast by Ubisoft sold far more. This really only underscores just how spectacularly those two games have flopped!

PC gaming is dead consoles are taking over...
God, how many more times is this same old same old argument going to begin?

Both Crysis and UT3 will both have lots of sales to come. Crysis because of spec, UT3 because of spec and community moving over.

Sales figures for approx 10 days only as UT3 was only out for that long in a lot of shops, some shops didn't get the game until a few days after the release date on the shelves from what some are saying on the official forums. Also this sales figure doesn't take into account the international sales for the game which will push this figure up for the 10 days in November up to 100k i would say with UK & German sales taken into account. The US market can be odd at times and think UT3 is one of those odd ones, as the European UT scene has always been a big buyer of the series. You can't just look at one market and decide the PC gaming scene is dying from one set of sales figures its misleading and wrong to do so.

Again this article was a heavily biased one towards console gaming and reported a lot of innacurate figures or misled as to the figures they used, especially the sales figures for the month they quoted. The game wasn't out for the whole of November so this bit is rubbish from that article and paints a very misleading picture of sales.

But it isn't about the game, it's an awesome tech demo for the engine, which will generate huge sums of money.

Farcry looked equally amazingly good for its time, yet i can't thnk of any other games that use that engine offhand.

I don't buy that. Crysis was made first and foremost as a game, and Crytek did not say at all that it's a tech demo. People use this as a defense way too much. If the game itself bombs, how would any other licensed games help to 'generate huge sums of money'? Doom 3 and Farcry are classic examples of this. I will bet you that the next two Crysis games in the trilogy will appear on consoles.

Maybe for some people but I'll be sticking to PC's, its either PC or console, not both for me, and consoles are just boring.

I dont think PC gaming will be dead for a long time.

What is with people saying this is a tech-demo for the engine? They'd already licensed the engine to about 8 developers and universites before crysis got released. Why would they bother sinking 3 years of development time, a story line and around 9 hours of gameplay for a tech-demo. This game really brings the trolls out of the wood work. People have two opinions of this game, amazing OMFG and WTF RAAAABISH! It seems everyone's judged it on the graphics, even if you claim gameplay>graphics, as soon as you see the standard of the graphics, if there's any aspect of it the falls short of the extremely high standard of graphics it just pants. This game is like a supermodel; in the sense that because he/she is assumed or considered to be extremely beautiful, people will look to pick faults and judge much quicker than you would an average looking person. Crysis is not a bad game.

Sorry, maybe my sarcasm didn't shine through, prolly should have put a rolleys after my first sentence :D

Hmm might be true might be bulls balls but pc gaming doesnt just depend on ut3 and crysis :P also take into account the fact that most of the big games of year were realeased pretty damn close to each other in q4

Main problem with UT3 is the damn lack of advertising. Only people who really follow gaming, or are a UT fan even know it exists :(
